New Contest: They didn't teach me this... and I needed it
So the things that I think of would definitely be finance education first. You know, I had math class in school where I was taught how to add and subtract and multiply, but I was not poo how to create a budget and how to save, how to invest, how to avoid going into debt. On a personal level, you know, those life skills learned early on would avoid so much trial and error in your life.
You know, that life skill of how to think and do things on your own, that critical thinking would have saved my life as well. School was for learning facts and figures that you had to know in order to pass a test; rather, it was about teaching life skills. You know, schools teach children how to achieve a certain goal. They're taught to look at something and take in the information and manipulate it correctly to achieve something, and that applies directly to life and their jobs.
So the one life skill that I learned to on my own, but not in school was my communication skills, and it was actually the communication skills on how to talk to people and how to really talk listen to them and make them heard and you know, and not just aboutpublicspeaking and anything like that but it was also about how people work too. And it really did help me feel that gaining just that one life skill helped me have real connections to the most important people in my life, and to really be able to understand other people on general, and also to be able to receive opportunity from it also in my life.
Education of emotions should be a necessity in children's lives as well. It teaches them how to cope with anger and stress in healthy ways and to show compassion for other people. Life skills like having proper conflict resolution skills, being able to be aware of how you're feeling, and resilience are all taught in school. These kinds of things could lead to students dealing with a lot of pressure effectively, good relationships and help make for a normal life and health.
I think the subject of finance should be a required one in schools. We need people to know about budgeting and saving and investing and proper credit card usage, basic tax information, dangers to watch out for with finance, fraud, etc., because all of these apply directly to kids' lives and it is usually learned after a series of bad experiences. Communication is an important part of everybody's life; your life will never go anywhere if you can't express yourself correctly and understand what other people are trying to convey, especially your closest friends and family, and that is a missing component. You know, although you give presentations in class children never actually learn how to speak to other people in general.
It is, in my opinion, a failing of the educational system to not teach you how to live, how to survive the world as it exists rather than focusing only on the testing. Your learning the information to take a test would undoubtedly give you a great score and grade in a subject, however you would never learn how to balance your own personal finances and also manage stress and deal with important people.
I truly feel stress management and the education of your emotions is vital; we have constant pressure on children at schools about exams and where you will end up in life. Schools are expected to teach children about relaxation through meditation or time management skills as coping with stress, and what about those times where we need more help; where there is so much stress you don't even know how to handle it then it comes into emotional intelligence as one of the best parts of everyone's life.
It's time schools looked past book learning and focused on teaching kids what to do and get as many opportunities in life skills to have you live the best life as you possibly could with the success that it entails as well as health and a happy spirit.
