A joyful stone

Green calcite is a stone that I work with frequently. It is not difficult to come by, nor is it expensive, and it is such a happy stone. Its light green color and lightly shiny surfaces fill me with an airy sense of free-spirited joy! I sometimes wear one of my green calcite necklaces when I am having trouble maintaining a pleasant disposition. You know--one of those days where you keep falling into bad moods, even though there is little to no reason for it.

The benefits of its fragility

Calcite is not a sturdy stone. While it does not flake apart in the hands like mica, or crumble against the fingers like a fragile piece of azurite, it does break apart easily when struck. It is for that reason that I frequently use it as the leaves of my tree pendants.

In my tree pendants, I like to wrap small stones into the branches, rather than use beads. It can be difficult though, to find stones that are small enough. So instead, I usually buy a large piece of green calcite, put a cloth over it, and lightly strike it with a hammer until it has fractured into many pieces. Some will be larger like the one in the above picture. And some will be small enough for my tree leaves like in the picture below.
