Friendship is one relationship you get to choose yourself. Aside from parents that is- they on your side always.
Broken friendships do tend to become more bitter, but if one is mended then the joy is crazy- this is experienced not read. ( Even though I was the one who ate humble pie and said sorry about all of it.)
