Is merit so meaningless, that demographics alone persuade you?

I often contemplate: If I, or a loved one, needs complicated surgery, and I have a choice between surgeons and surgical staff {a} with dozens of years and hundreds of successful surgeries behind them, and {b} surgeons and staff without successful experience, but they are colored, and bisexual, and no Y chromosomes - I have NO doubt which I would choose!

What about you? Is merit so meaningless, that demographics alone persuade you?
