I'm so glad I didn't offer something on this round. Your piece was brilliant and satisfying. I thought the ending would have been fine after the first part. Then I read:

Humans could not escape their nature; they always looked for permanence and meaning outside themselves. It suspected it was a consequence of their need to reboot every few hours.

A seeming throwaway, with significance and humor.
