SLC-S28/W1-"Local Taste, Global Twist| Breakfast!"
It's a pleasure to participate in this week's Steemit Challenge where creativity in Local dish blends with the imagination of Global dish which allows us to tell stories about its twist, taste, aroma, color and presentation. This class gives us the ability to reinvent recipes, rethink the appropriate flavors and showcase the breakfast meal in a beautiful and attractive manner.
Question 1: Share your before-and-after dish (original + global twist) you can add the processes and give the name and origin of your local breakfast.
Making a local recipe and giving it a global twist sparks a serious curiosity while I was on the process but the combination and outcome brings back my confidence just by making use of my own style of cooking.
I will be displaying both the local dish and global twist in different sections.
Section 1: Local Taste ( Akara)
---
Ingredients Used for Akara Recipe
- Beans
- Fresh pepper
- Onions
- Salt
- Maggi
- Vegetable oil
Prepare Processes
---
Wash and peel the beans before blending with onions and fresh pepper.
Pour it into the mortar, add salt and maggi then mix continuously with pestle to give a smooth texture.
Add sliced pepper and onions and mix all the ingredients together.
Set the pan on low heat then add sufficient vegetable oil for frying.
Add the mixture to hot vegetable oil and big slices of onions to give it a beautiful brownish look.
Flip the akara for the other side to fry as well.
Akara: originated from Yoruba, South-western Nigeria.
My akara was ready without wasting much time ( although the entire process is time consuming).
Section 2: Global Twist ( Meal Oats)
---
Ingredients Used for Oatmeal
- Quaker oats
- Milk
- Sugar
- Watermelon
Preparation Processes
---
In a pan, mix the quaker oats with cold water. Set it on low heat and stir continuously.
Add sugar ( desired quantity) and a little water and continue stirring.
Turn off the gas when it's properly cooked. Add milk and mix together.
After putting my desired portion in a plate, I added another sachet of powdered milk and a little warm water. Lastly, I used watermelon for the topping.
Oatmeal: Originated from United States
Question 2: What global element or idea did you add to give it a twist?
Oat meal is a global meal itself, pieces of watermelon added to the meal which gives it the actual twist just like the way it is usually served from its origin.
Question 3: How did the new version taste or look compared to the original?
The new version of this breakfast tasted perfectly good. The look and the combination gives a sweet plus a savory balance, creamy and warm in the mouth.
Question 4: What inspired your creativity in this dish?
My creativity for this dish was inspired by few factors; personal experience, availability/ accessibility of ingredients and curiosity.
This recipe is not new to me, I have tried akara and oat meal recipes few times. Since all the ingredients were available and accessible, I decided to try something different. I have been avoiding homemade akara for long now but since I'm already getting bored of other types of beans recipe ( moi-moi and others) so I decided to make akara.
I was actually curious on how the oatmeal will turn out after adding watermelon.
My experience was joyful and I was fulfilled that I was able to turn both local and global ingredients into extraordinary experience.
I will invite @josepha, @chant and @mvchacin.
Video of my recipe is attached below;

Oh wow this looks so appetizing I have really missed having a teste of a well fried akara this breakfast is so rich and nutritional, wishing you success.
Honestly, you should try homemade again. The taste and richness is totally different from those ones sold by the roadside 😀

Hi Ady love, it’s so good to read from you after a long while! Your akara looks so inviting—I’m literally salivating here, hahaha. And that combo with oatmeal, which originally comes from the USA, makes it even more filling. Well done, dear!
Though from what I understood, you were supposed to use the akara to create more of a global twist. But anyway, I’m wishing you all the best!
I need to try it out someday
Thank you for your valuable comment.

Oats is actually a global ingredient and I really like the creative way you have added watermelon to it. I have heard about this Nigerian dish before but this time you have put a twist on it. Your curiosity is what made you interested in making this dish. I think every chef should have that curiosity so that new dishes can be invented. Best wishes to you my friend.
Honestly!, curiosity is such a powerful ingredient in cooking and it’s amazing how it can transform even the simplest meals. I’m glad you loved my twist with watermelon, it was fun experimenting with it! Your encouraging words means a lot, thank you so much!😊
