What if social media could be simple again?

What if your posts lived directly on the blockchain, without a centralized backend, without a server, and without a company controlling the conversation?

That is the idea behind SteemTwist.

SteemTwist is a decentralized microblogging application built on the Steem blockchain. It combines the speed and simplicity of modern social platforms with the permanence and openness of blockchain technology.

Unlike many web applications, SteemTwist has no backend server and no complicated infrastructure. The entire application runs as a static website. Behind the scenes, it consists of only four runtime files that interact directly with the Steem blockchain through Steem APIs and Steem Keychain.

Every SteemTwist user is called a Twister 🌀. Twisters create short posts called Twists, reply to other Twists, share content through Retwists, and show appreciation with Twist Love.

Home and Explore

SteemTwist offers two main ways to discover content.

Home provides a personalized stream from people you follow, while Explore lets you browse the global Twist Stream. You can sort content by New, Hot, or Top, and even enable the real-time Firehose mode to watch new activity appear live as it happens on-chain.

For users who want to see the broader Steem ecosystem, there is also an Understream mode that reveals regular Steem posts alongside SteemTwist content.

Trending Topics in Real Time

One feature I am particularly excited about is Trending Now.

Instead of relying on a server-side index or external analytics service, SteemTwist performs trend detection entirely in your browser. It continuously analyzes loaded content and surfaces semantic topics that are gaining momentum.

The system groups related words into topics and displays the hottest conversations happening in your current view. Everything runs locally and requires no centralized trend engine.

Live Twists ⚡

Perhaps the most unique feature of SteemTwist is the concept of Live Twists.

A Live Twist is a post that contains JavaScript code which can run inside a secure sandbox when the reader chooses to execute it.

This means Twisters can create interactive polls, calculators, dashboards, blockchain explorers, games, educational demos, and many other experiences directly inside a social post.

The code runs inside an isolated iframe sandbox with multiple layers of security, including content sanitization, blocked network access, confirmation dialogs for blockchain actions, and strict execution limits.

SteemTwist even includes a built-in Live Twist editor and a gallery of ready-to-use templates, making it easy for non-programmers to experiment.

Private Communication

SteemTwist also supports Secret Twists, which are end-to-end encrypted messages stored on-chain.

Only the intended recipient can decrypt and read the content. Secret Twists support markdown formatting, image uploads, and encrypted replies, creating a private communication channel without relying on a centralized messaging server.

Built for the Community

SteemTwist was designed around a simple philosophy:

  • Decentralized by default
  • No backend servers
  • Open blockchain data
  • Censorship resistance
  • User-controlled identity
  • Interactive social experiences

All posts are stored on the Steem blockchain, and the application itself can be hosted as a static website. This approach keeps the architecture transparent and easy to audit while remaining accessible to anyone with a Steem account.

Try It Today

If you have a Steem account and Steem Keychain installed, I invite you to give SteemTwist a try.
