Have you ever imagined playing a classic board game where every move becomes part of a blockchain?

Today I'm happy to introduce Reversteem, a new web application that lets anyone play Reversi (also known as Othello) while using the Steem blockchain as the game's permanent history.

What is Reversi?

Reversi is a classic strategy board game played on an 8×8 board by two players.

One player controls the black discs, while the other controls the white discs. Players take turns placing discs on the board, flipping the opponent's discs whenever they become trapped between two of their own.

The rules are incredibly simple, but the strategy can become surprisingly deep. Every move affects the rest of the game, and one careless decision can completely change the outcome.

The winner is the player who controls the most discs when the game ends.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, Reversi is easy to learn and challenging to master.

Why Reversteem?

Many online board games rely on centralized servers that keep track of the game state.

Reversteem takes a different approach.

Instead of storing matches on a private server, the game uses the Steem blockchain itself.

Every game is represented by a Steem post, while moves are stored as replies. Because those posts are permanently recorded on the blockchain, every match has a transparent and immutable history.

The application simply reads that history and reconstructs the board position.

This means there is no dedicated game server that owns your matches.

Fully Frontend

One aspect I'm particularly proud of is that Reversteem is a fully client-side application.

There is:

No backend server
No database
No smart contracts
No installation required

Just open the website in your browser and start playing.

The application is hosted as a static website, making it lightweight and easy to access from anywhere.

Spectators Are Welcome

You don't even need to log in if you only want to watch.

Visitors can browse ongoing games, open finished matches, and replay every move directly from the blockchain.

If you have a Steem account and Steem Keychain, you can immediately join games, create your own matches, and compete with other players.

Automatic Ratings

Winning games is rewarding, but it's even more fun when you can measure your progress.

Reversteem includes an ELO rating system, allowing players to climb a leaderboard as they play more rated games.

The rankings are calculated from completed matches, giving everyone a way to track their improvement over time.

Whether you're aiming to become the strongest player or simply enjoy friendly competition, the leaderboard adds another layer of excitement.

Different Time Controls

Not everyone wants to play at the same pace.

Reversteem supports multiple time controls, including:

Blitz
Rapid
Standard
Daily

You can even create games with your own custom time limit.

This makes the platform suitable for quick casual games as well as slower correspondence-style matches.

Designed for the Steem Community

Reversteem is built specifically for Steem users.

Games are connected with your Steem account, making it easy to recognize familiar usernames from the community.

Since games are stored on-chain, anyone can view them, revisit old matches, or share interesting games with others.

It's another example of how Steem can be used for much more than publishing articles and social interaction.

Easy to Start

Getting started only takes a few steps:

Log in using your Steem account with Steem Keychain.
Create a new game or join an existing one.
