If you are going to trade on an exchange look into BitSquare, you keep your coins under your control on your own computer. I have used it several times to swap cryptos without trouble, though I have not tried using Fiat to purchase bitcoin yet, it is possible. As a Canadian, I have found QuickBT the easiest to get Bitcoin on a moments notice, with just an Interact online purchase from my RBC account.
