If you want to get some whale upvotes, I would recommend noting how this platform compares to Bitshares. What can it do that bitshares can't? How would you wow Dan Larimer with this project?

It is simple. You claim in order for us to get upvotes we must talk about Bitshares. What does Bitshares have to do with this article? Nothing. We aren't going to compromise our journalistic standards in order to get upvotes. The sheer fact you suggested it pretty much shows how Steem is a rigged system.
I didn't claim you must talk about Bitshares to get upvotes -- only recommended it if you were to want them. What Bitshares has to do with the article is that it is an existing system that may be able to do everything the Stratis platform can do, and more, with proven performance. Not sure why you're hostile, when my recommendation, for this particular audience, would apply whether or not upvotes are monetized or not. Since Steem is open source, feel free to create your own version that is less rigged.
