What Discussing Cryptocurrency with Random People Reveals
As a rideshare driver, I have the opportunity to speak with people from all different walks of life, and from a wide array of professions. I interact with individuals in the financial sector, the real estate market, programmers, medical practitioners. Whenever appropriate, I bring up the topic of cryptocurrency to gauge a person's interest/knowledge level.
I do this not only because it is something I'm very interested in (obviously, I'm posting this on Steemit), but because I want to see how widely known the subject of blockchain currency is.
I recently had a passenger who worked at a financial technology startup firm, a prime candidate to be knowledgeable about the topic. When I brought up the subject of cryptocurrency and the like, he told me that his firm was looking into ways to utilize blockchain technology within their business. However, when I brought up the subject of altcoins, he did not know any specific alternatives to Bitcoin.
This has been a common theme in my conversations with people regarding crypto-related topics. Most people have some knowledge of Bitcoin at this point, yet they tend to have almost no knowledge of the hundreds of other digital stores of value that exist within the marketplace.
Despite the meteric rise of altcoins in recent months/weeks, combined with Bitcoin's continued dominance, it is clear that a large majority of people still have limited to no knowledge of alternative cryptocurrencies.
This is evidence that we are still in the very early stages of this movement.
A 60 billion dollar market share for crypto is impressive, yet it is proof that this form of currency is still in its infancy, especially when compared to the scale of the global economy.
I would be interested in the percentage of people who could name just 3 altcoins. I would wager it is still in the 1-3 percentile of the general population, at least in America. It makes certain predictions, such as Steem reaching 10 dollars, seem completely feasible.
I attended a retirement party of 50 or more public school educators today. I was one of maybe three who could even explain what Bitcoin was, much less identify another crypto.
BINGO! It still has huge potential because the vast majority of individuals aren't even aware of other Cryptos.
