Background: Current State of Social Media

There is a lot of recent happenings that has brought to fore how important the security of user data is, which should be taking seriously. One that easily comes to mind is the recent major disruption on Facebook where it was revealed by Facebook itself that about 87 million users’ personal data were leaked from Facebook. These information were allegedly used for certain candidates during the last U.S. presidential election.

It’s important to add that, I believe no platform would willing allows the data of their users to be leak in such a manner. Yes, it can sometimes be due to their negligence, and I’d like to add ‘the negligence mostly occasioned by the desire to make more profit by increasing their user-base’. Well, it’s almost impossible for such not to happen as things currently stands; in this system of centralized profit dependent social media platforms, where platforms are highly competing to outdo themselves in user-base, since the user-base determines their potential for bigger profit, and they are constantly changing their platforms and ads systems so fast, to make this happen.

One other underlining aspect of social media as it stands now, is that users who owns and generate the contents are not always treated like content creators and so not financially rewarded as such. Because, it is believed that the platforms are open and provided free of charge to the users. So, the $millions earned in profit from users’ contents and interactions, goes to the platform owners and shareholders. However, that fact remains that users’ contents and interactions are what the social media platforms thrives on and without them no social media platform can succeed.

Foresting, aims to provide a solution to the above and many other issues currently being face in the social media, so what exactly is Foresting?
