I think cryptocurrency mining may well have served its purpose... it is unsustainable now and not at all practical. Having said that, Bitcoin and the likes did give the world a glimpse of what could and will be... a world with digital currency. The digital currency that will make it, and will also be a lot more sustainable is GODcoin (of course! lol)
