Here’s what no one tells you about using metaphors. Sometimes the metaphor is more confusing than just telling it like it is.
For a long time, fitness lecturers would use the operation of a motor vehicle, usually an automobile or engine, to explain how the human body works. They would literally say, “the human body is like an automobile,” and then talk about how the carburetor breathes; they would equate different types of fuels with foods, and so on. I got it. Because your boy was a mechanic for many years during the Cold War. So it never dawned on me that there might be aspiring fitness trainers in the room that didn’t know how cars worked.
Okay, you can put premium gas in the tank and presumably your car runs better. More power for passing on he highway, or peeling out from one stop light to the next. But what happens when you put too much gas in the tank? In the human body, what happens when you put too much food in the tank?
Get it?
During my career as a fitness professional, I heard these comparisons so often, I began to push back. Humans are not like automobiles, or any machines. It’s the other way around.
It’s not human arrogance that we fancy our forms as the best and most functionally efficient of divine designs. It’s ignorance. When humans evolved to the level of wondering what the shape of the Earth was, they figured it was shaped like a human being. What else could it possibly be? They believed the same of the heavens. The universe was fashioned into a circle. The zodiac. 360 degrees divided into a dozen parts of 30 degrees each. Then, to insert the human body into the zodiac, man bent the human body into a circle, and associated each zodiacal sign, or constellation, to a body part. This is why Aries is associated with the head. The “a r” letter combination means, “head,” or “top.” Think of the “a r c h,” the arch is at the top of two pillars. The, “a r c h” in Monarch, means ruler.
Pisces is associated with the feet. (Pisces literally means, “fishes”).
So, maybe it started as ignorance, but became arrogance. Even more likely, these associations were mnemonics to help a population of survivors remember who they are.
But back to the man & machine association. When attempting to explain a concept, your humble vagabond often defaults back to the “man is like a machine” metaphor. Which I do not like to do, but it seems to work.
Well, it works for me, let me know if it makes sense to you.
Here’s the situation as We perceive it, from the simulation.
Let’s begin with the circle. 360 elements to survival. 90 elements are luxury items. The options and services you get with your new vehicle. Many are superfluous. Think about some of the gaudy accessories; captain’s chairs, heated seats, rims, hydrolics, extra mirrors, keyless entry, all the gadgets that interact with your phone. 180 elements are “required,” let’s say, to make the vehicle street legal. Their are 45 that are necessary, and 45 more that are vital.
This vehicle, is your vessel. It’s your life. It’s your health, your shelter, your status, your esteem, your pleasure, your duties, and your survival.
What’s happening in this era, as we see it, is that the “system” is removing these items little by little. Maybe it seems quicker to some than to others. It depends on your “station & standards.”
I would like this to be an easy and measured example, but it won’t be.
There are items of survival that are purchased outright. One and done. If you can manage to maintain these items, you may never have to replace them, and if you do, only once or twice. There are others, staples, that must be renewed on a regular and predictable basis. Subscriptions. These resources are vulnerable to supply chain shortages, price fluctuations and your ability to acquire them. Sometimes it’s not just a matter of purchasing power.
Let’s imagine that 25% of these resources, randomly selected, vanish and are no longer available. What if your income is cut? What if the staples’ availability is diminished? What if you must expend more abstract resources, (time, energy, patience), to acquire a staple, a recurring need?
Adjustments must be made. Standards must be lowered, in some instances. Pleasures must be curtailed.
Back to the vehicle metaphor. Perhaps the tires on your jeep, have to be driven on longer than is, “recommended” because of shortages of supply, natural resources, or purchasing power? Back in the day, after market retailers offered higher output spark plugs and fuel additives that claimed to improve gas mileage. This was during the “oil crisis” of the 1970s. This can be related to the supplements market, or even big pharma products. But how about the vehicle manufacturer builds a flaw into the vehicle that requires periodic maintenance? Think how the food industry processes ingredients which damage the vessel to the point of medical intervention.
The bottom line is, when you see this coming, (which we have for many years now), you must prepare to make adjustments. Those adjustments must be mental, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, economic, and maybe a dozen other ways according to where you are on the pyramid.
I will leave you with my most significant example. Yours truly. In 1996, this vessel was 60 lbs overweight. In a perpetual state of less than optimum health, especially compared with today. We were shown the writing on the wall. The American health care crisis. So we took control. It was trial and error across the board. Knowledge, discipline, time management, desire, spite, and the need to be a role model for my seeds. The details are something any health coach guru might compile in a lecture aimed at selling a book. For your boy it’s real life. The next thirty years doesn’t look any easier, although, relatively speaking we’ve crawled out of the depths of the well, only to discover we’re trapped beneath a dome. But we’ve learned a few solid and repeatable techniques, our discipline is more powerful and our philosophy has proven itself.
That is all.
