Sexual cyberbullying: "I thought that my son played an innocent video game but they sent him pornographic images"

The online game Roblox has 90 million users and is marketed as for children, but there are fears that it will also be used by pedophiles to deceive minors.

From Roblox they assured the BBC that they are committed to protecting the safety of children although they chose not to comment on individual cases.

Next, we relate the experience of a mother and her son, user of the videogame.

"They were talking about rape, they were talking about sexual activities that were pornographic," says Sarah (not her real name), recalling some of the graphic messages sent to her son.

"I was 7 years playing videogames in a robe and without leaving home"
I had been playing Roblox online, where users build their own games and create characters with blocks of colors.

Sarah initially thought it was an "innocent game".

She had activated the parental controls, so her son, who was not yet a teenager, could not send messages.

But, over time, he noticed a change in his behavior.

I no longer wanted to participate in family activities, which I used to enjoy a lot.

Concerned, she decided to review the game and discovered that she had been communicating with others in a third-party application.

It was at that moment when he realized that his son had been tricked into sending sexually explicit images of himself.

"We found some pictures," he tells the BBC program Victoria Derbyshire. "It was horrible, I felt disgusted."

Roblox told the BBC that his chat in the game has very strict filters and any exchange of photos should have been made in a third-party application, which is not "affiliated with or integrated with Roblox".

"It's extremely important to be careful with these chat applications, particularly (those with a) 'overlay' feature that makes it look like it's part of any game you're playing."

It's a situation that former police officer John Woodley knows other parents have also experienced.

Woodley visits UK schools with his colleague John Staines warning children about the worst scenarios of online gaming.

The ex-clerk believes that parents do not realize that there are people who find ways to communicate with children despite the controls.

In third-party applications, he says, "they can have them send photos and have verbal conversations with them."

For Amanda Naylor, who leads Barnardo, a non-profit association that seeks to protect children from child sexual abuse, the industry must do more to protect them.

Naylor believes that although Roblox can take action when they are informed, children often do not understand that they are being abused, so they do not tell anyone.

Parents with the necessary skills
Naylor also estimates that parents should be "trained" or acquire the necessary skills to know how to protect their children.

There are parental control filters (specific software to filter content) that have been on the market for years, but some parents feel that they do not know enough about technology to activate them properly.

It is also important that when the abuse occurs, he adds, the children receive adequate support afterwards, as it could have an impact on their future relationships.

Sarah says that in her case, she contacted Roblox to ask how they had "allowed" them to abuse their son.

"They did not answer me," he says.

And when she took the case to the police and the officers tried to access the IP addresses of the alleged harassers, Roblox "refused" to give that information.

"They did not let the police investigate the matter because we're in the UK and they're a US company," says Sarah.

The police agent with whom Sarah was in contact told the BBC program Victoria Derbyshire that she only had authority to investigate the crimes that occurred in the United Kingdom and in this case the people who harassed Sarah's son were in another country.

Roblox told the program that players could report inappropriate behavior using the "abuse reporting system" and that the stalkers could be suspended or their accounts deleted.
