It was a collaboration between two artists, both young female R&B singers, who were believed as rivals then. Brandy had a multiplatinum album and a number of top 10 hits already, and so is Monica. The two collaborated in this historic song "The Boy is Mine", which eventually became a global hit reaching number 1 for 13 weeks on US Billboard Hot 100, while it reached number 2 both in UK Singles chart and Eurochart Hot 100. The singles served as the lead single from the two artists' second albums, Brandy with "Never Say Never" and Monica also entitled "The Boy Is Mine".
