Not all feedback supports growth. Criticism often finds fault and demoralizes learners, while critique challenges and expands viewpoints to improve outcomes and support professional development.

Feedback is one of the most powerful tools in education. It can help learners see what they missed, rethink their decisions, and improve their practice. But feedback can also harm. The difference often lies in whether the educator is offering criticism or critique.

Criticism focuses on fault. It asks, “What is wrong?” and often stops there. When feedback is centered only on fault, learners may feel ashamed, discouraged, or defensive. They may become less willing to ask questions or admit uncertainty. In clinical education, this can be dangerous because silence does not create safer practice.

Critique works differently. Critique challenges a viewpoint, expands understanding, and helps change practice in order to improve the outcome. It does not avoid difficult conversations. It may still be direct, rigorous, and uncomfortable. But its purpose is growth, not humiliation.

A good critique preserves dignity while asking for better thinking. It may say, “Let’s look at this from the patient’s perspective,” “What evidence supports that decision?” or “How might this outcome change if we approached it differently?” These questions do not crush the learner. They invite the learner into professional reasoning.

Nursing needs critique. Safe care requires reflection, correction, and the courage to examine assumptions. But nursing does not need demoralizing fault-finding disguised as education. The goal of feedback should not be to make a learner feel small. The goal should be to help a professional grow.

One Line for Nurses and Learners:
Feedback becomes educational only when it helps the learner grow without being diminished.
