Let's talk about visibility, exposure, gaining a following, making connections... or whatever other phrase you think about.
In the last few weeks I have reviewed MANY pages by newbies and members of the #newbieresteemday initiative.
This post by @terminallyill, is a tutorial on how to use the esteem app and was live two days ago and while it has some great images with a step-by-step process and is a great quality post, it only has 12 Upvotes and 31 views. @terminallyill used perfect tags for this post but his visibility wasn't noticed.
But why? His reputation is 44. He has 361 followers and he interacts with with other members. He replies to comments. He goes around steemit commenting and Upvoting. So what's the problem? Why are most of his posts earning so little (with the exception of a few)- most are earning under $1 when payout time comes around. Hmmmm....
My first question would be... what Discord groups do you belong to? Any curation groups? If not... JOIN them. RUN! This is the easiest way to get more visibility. Post promote your links, make sure you follow the group's rules when post promoting too.
@bashadow is offering some great incentives on his page. He's offering to help a new steemian in this post. Granted this post is about 24 hours old and he's had about eight comments, 15 Upvotes and 51 views on the post, but why is it only earning $1.74. @bashadow is giving of himself in this post. So why isn't he getting more comments or people accepting his help?
Hmmm... what could be the problem? He has a reputation of 55, so he's not too new to the platform. He has almost 700 followers. He's using his time on steemit so wisely. He's had good payouts in the past.
We all have posts that don't pay out a lot and that's ok. If you read in the comments, he did offer help to one steemian reaching out to him. This was the eighth post of this topic and @bashadow is continuing to do the newbieresteem weekly posts. Why? Because he is being consistent. He knows new steemians will find his page and his posts; with the end result being he will help someone this week, then maybe two or three next, perhaps five the following week. He is building his following, making his brand with this post title and people will be seeking him out. He is making it happen and one day it will all pay off for him.
Being consistent, being visible, promoting your work and making sure you are answering your comments are just a few ways you need to be there for your following; and for building a following.

Thanks @goldendawn for helping me to throw lights on my questions. I will put these into practice.
The UPvotes are coming in through auto-vote bots. If you have a post that only has 10 views but 15 UPvotes then it is that some of the people UPvoting are using a bot. This means they have it set up to automatically UPvote certain people's posts. They either know this person is writing quality content, want to be supportive and do not want to miss a post.
I have found the best way to become visible honestly was to join Discord groups and communities and be active. I belong to about a dozen Discord groups, am active daily in about six of them and comment, post promote.
Also... one thing I notice... if you comment on someone's post and they comment back, they are more likely to go to your page and perhaps comment on one of your posts. The more you do this, the more traffic comes to your page and posts. People are here for interaction so you have to use this to your advantage.

I agree with you about the task of climbing here, that's why we are focusing on this aspect. I think if we can work with people in those first few weeks, we can help shape the platform in a positive and lasting way.

This is just an opinion, I have not been following you long. I have only heard good things about you when mentioned though.
Myself I have problems at times of where to put a vote. The limitation on the votes you can do I think is essential. This limits users to a voting max of 10 votes per day possibly 11, or your voting power will keep going down not having the time to replenish.
I also like to only vote four posts at a time and wait a few hours before voting again, Unsure but I feel this gives a slightly stronger vote when I do.
I also use probably half my votes up-voting myself trying to get that extra vote for myself and possibly a reward. Those who comment in my blog or reply to comments I have made I also like to up vote where I can.
Between the self vote and the vote on replies to me, I trap myself at times with nothing left to vote with or my voting power will decrease faster then I can accumulate.
In the past week or so I have only began to expand/change where my voting goes, This is down to reading comments like your own and @simplymike @Spiritualmax @ilyastarar also my steem power has built some and I feel I am beginning to grow, more of my votes then I give to myself as the need for voting for myself is deminishing as I grow. 1 vote for myself now is like 2.5 votes I needed a month ago.
You and those I mentioned are a positive influence on myself and I am guessing many others.

Steemworld is my go-to page. I have it open daily and use it often throughout my steemit work.
I stopped UPvoting myself months ago... why? Just my personal preference. I have no issue with it, but I would rather UPvote another member and make connections that way then use (at the time) limited UPvotes for me. But againm this is my personal preference.
I know you can get the slider bar from busy.org before you reach the 500SP mark. Maybe check into that.
Thank you @goldendawne! I use Steemworld thus far only for the Manual Vote. I really like it because even though my vote isnt worth much, I can spread encouragement around to more people if I am not Upvoting @ 100%. As for Upvoting myself, I am not certain if I did that and if I did, that was inadvertent - not something I will be doing deliberately.
Like I said to @bashadow, my only challenge with the manual vote slider is that I cannot figure out how to use it for comments. On posts I have no trouble
For the slider on the comments it should be the same. My slider bar comes up whether it's for the actual post or the comment section.
@brayias, the Voting Slider on steemworld works like a charm! Thank you so much for your patience in explaining it to me @bashadow. I still can't figure out how to do it with Upvoting comments though! Thanks again for your help!
@steemchiller is always working on his program, so things may have changed a little bit. You will need you posting key to use the slider. That last 'z' thing can be tricky, so when posting the link in the link box even if the right name shows in the author box "Remove the 'z' and put it back'

I didn’t know about a manual voting slider on Steemworld. I’ll need to check that out.
To be honest, I’ve been using the site for months, but it wasn’t until last week that I found some tutorials by @steemchiller that showed me a bit of the real potential of that site. :0)
ask @bashadow... he is our professor when it comes to the manual voting slider... and yes steemworld is great! I love the account operations page and teh coming author rewards. I couldn't possible manage my replies without the first's ability to sort and focus on what I want to see. And I couldn't manage my gameplan without the 2nd to know what is coming and when.

Hey @brayias, first thank you for coming here and giving such a thoughtful comment! It is important to express yourself more than anything here on steemit. I understand your points about voting and that is something that we all go through. I'm glad you are giving it consideration because it is how you will learn what works best for you!
The things you will weigh as you continue to grow here on steemit, is how you plan on growing and what methods will you use. Most people don't plan, they just do a little of everything. You seem like a planner, so I will be glad to assist you with ideas.
To give you the higher view and break it down broadly, you can grow by maiximizing every available tool for yourself to use (which there are many more productive ways that just upvoting yourself)... or you can grow by growing your network of friends and followers and helping them to grow with you. (this way looks at the deepness and wideness of the relationships as a measuring stick for success). And of course you can do both if you are a superstar.
The reason I bring this up is that you can focus on a strategy to fit your individual style. There is no "right" way to do things, there are just many tools you can use to accomplish your goals here.

For been a planner, I am not so sure, I come prepared with a decent amount of ad-lib. I am definitely a Dreamer, dreams they can begin anywhere tho, unlike the reality where something must have a beginning. I am just taking my first steps in a dream right now. The world is changing in many ways and will change in ways we cannot foresee. Some changes are already happening as seen with Crypto and now I see with my introduction to the Steemit platform.
On my own morals, I cannot buy votes, so the use of bots to gain an advantage I avoid unless they are offered free.
I do not use other formats of blogging or Twitter at the moment and will be a while before I would begin to use. I see the advantages of but I would prefer to learn a bit more about Steemit before expanding. Within Steemit, I am not chasing followers, Well I am but not in a hurry to find a massive audience.
My strategy right now is aligning myself with people like yourself, Following you, commenting on your posts, should I have a view not expressed, possibly at times speaking in a manner of opposition to the view stated. I do not do so in a negative manner but more to show or state something which I have not observed but came to mind. @simplymike started this line of action for me inadvertently. Not all your comment I will post a reply to. some will be beyond my thinking, others, where I see an opinion from me, would not do anything for the post or opinion. I see yourself and other users I have mentioned in other posts above, as mentors to the community in a positive way. while you gain from the upvotes to your comments you all have contributed back with the sharing of your votes not to mention the obvious knowledge you share. I waffled on there a bit. Open minded people who are willing to contribute in some form are my target audience.
I want to take back the world.
Where I could use some help, is in the creation of a blog list.
I believe strongly! there is a need for greater equality and now is a pivoting point where we can begin to introduce different methods to achieve these positive goals.
A blog list to create would provide a roadmap in a sequence which I could write on and the topics could follow each other.
For this, I would have to discuss in detail with yourself or any other who might show interest in picking my brain. If you chose a platform to use with a faster communication it would make it much easier on my part at least.
This is @brayias the account is logged in and the key code thing has been painted a lovely tree :) once the software can no longer be upgraded the account will not be usable. I still use it to play poker freerolls with to try boost the Steem I can have with the winnings.

I want to take back this world too... While I understand it might not happen in my lifetime, that doesn't mean that I shouldn't do my part. The reason I originally stayed here and was my original motivation, was exactly that mission. Since I've been here though a funny thing happened, I made friends. Now I must admit that I am equally motivated to help them here as much as I was originally to change the world.
I think the last point about your account is that this is a new account for @brayias... I don't know why you switched, because I don't understand the comment about the software can no longer be upgraded. But it makes no difference to me. I make connections with people not accounts... ;)

@davemccoy I have complied and resteemed the post. Not for the nickel, nor the fact you mentioned me, but because it is a valuable post. It is often easy to overlook good quality and helpful post. I try to get to our post promo box at least once a day, and also on IFC post promo box. I do wish people would just put post there and not chat, but it does get confusing sometimes in discord where people are, so it really isn't a big problem.
A little bit more for our newbie members and for new users, there is a lot on the NewbieDiscord chat than meets the eye, along with Dear Dawne, there is a post feedback drop box put up by @penderis. If you do not want to avail yourself of Dawne, because you just have a quicky question, or do not want to distract her from helping others, or just want someone else to take a look at a post you made. @jorlauski, wanted a Team response, so both @lynncoyle1 and myself, since we were there responded.
We really need to get daz or someone to do a real nice post on our discord chat room, there is so much new stuff there, even I have missed some of it. Well I think maybe I did earn that nickle. have a good evening all, or morning.

@davemccoy, there is soooo much going on all of the time, it's hard to #1 keep it all together, and #2 have enough voting power to hit everyone up.
I know consistency is key, and eventually, we'll all be in a position to have more power to upvote etc. , but it really does take time...and patience. There is soooo many good quality posts on here; I could spend 24 hours a day looking, and I'd still find more. And as you both know, I spend plenty of time on here as it is :)

@bashadow- you should do the post for the DIscord group. You have been a powerful advocate for the group, making some great posts advertising and promoting the newbieresteemday and offering help to others.
The group has grown so much since I first chatted with @davemccoy a month or so ago and every day new steemians are finding the group.
I would but I really don't know much about discord, Daz made me a moderator, so I guess I add and change and remove things but I don't understand what some of the functions are.But I will give it a try next sunday, Got a lot to do between now and then, Mostly thinking about my round 13 IFC try.
I can relate to the scheduling of posts. I have a million topics and ideas sitting in my notebook for reference for future posts.
Discord can be tricky if you're a moderator and just starting on it. I have issue some days too and will usually contact another mod to ask what I can't figure out.

I agree with you 100% @bashadow... It is amazing how many things are happening as our network has expanded. I see new things that are springing up all the time that I didn't even know where coming! I think it is great for you to come up with suggestions too... I agree that we need to leverage our many members to help us keep track. Just a month ago is was much easier, but now thanks to awesome people like you and those you mention, the place is growing with everyone doing there part!
And did you know that there is now a Steemit Greeters Guild established to greet the newbies in that crucial first few weeks and also to seek out and train right off the bat? @markkennard and @terminallyill are running that and it will help us grow even faster! ;)

This is such a wonderful initiative @davemccoy and @goldendawne! It's like a "Minnow 911" service! You are both two remarkable humans and Steemians! Your brain and heart would have a tough competition if they were to compete with each other!
I do have a question regarding the value of posts. I am understanding what makes the value of a post increase. But what makes the value of a post DECREASE? I don't pay close attention to the "money" (as in life - sigh), but I happened to notice on a couple posts, a reduction in value. Why/how is this?

The amount of reward for your post can decrease for 3 main reasons.
2a. The reverse of this is also true. If the price of STEEM rises, your SBDs will increase but the amount of invested STEEM you receive decreases.
If only 20 accounts have been active for the last week that have but all of a sudden we have an increase in user activity to 35 accounts; we still have the same reward pool to share but have added another 15 people to spread it out across. All shares will be less especially if the 15 accounts that have started to vote have a large SP holding.

I suspect things will start falling into place and making even more sense! I have been here since aug2017 and if it wasn't for @familyprotection(and a bit of perseverance, I must admit) I would have earned next-to-nothing.
I am similar to the second example you gave(600 followers/rank59) That seems a good status, but up until recently I would get very little for a post not tagged with @familyprotection. I put just as much effort into these post as I do with @fp, but the payouts are poor considering others get $$$ for posting a picture or short quote. This isn't envy(well maybe a bot ;), because I have really begun to enjoy blogging. My punctuation is terrible but I try as hard as I can with that. I try to make up for my mistakes with content and using the markdown tool as much as possible. Have a great tutorial for markdown in this link, by @gmuxxx. I have just found the @mspwaves broadcast and it is tied to @minnowsupport. As @fp have been so generous to me and @canadian-coconut helps run the PAL discord group, I thought it right to give back an delegate so of my sp to @minnowsupport. That was only a couple of days ago but I have reaped the benefits. The people there are a great bunch and it caused me to have a very late night listening to the @mspwaves. What I would like to ask you, #dawne, is: How do I post moving gifs or images and where can I source them from. I think that I read that they do not appear on the preview but will appear when you post the article. I've not tried it because I lost track of the tutorial. 2nd question is: Can you direct me to anymore good discord channels/groups?

I like the AI logic of truffles and it is a great way to highlight minnows. Unfortunately, what is estimated by truffles does not occur for many of us. My post was estimated around 38 or so but made it to 2 I think. I do like the idea behind it but the problem is many of these posts will never get the exposure to the right people to make it up there. I know @davemccoy says he has a plan. Will be interesting to see another one of his plans.
Hey @beeyou if you get a chance, could you wrap that amazing brain around how they determine what a post will go to? You are far more intelligent than me on algorithms and general computer geek things :P ... And I stress, "when you get a chance" because it is something that can wait a couple of weeks. My plan is a little longer on this one than most of them, so I don't want to take you off of you engagmentfest and distract you tonight! You have many people to delight with your charming personality (including me :D ), but I wanted to mention this before I forget it! ;)
My powerful brain cells may not be able to delve into this one. I took a peek at truffles master's post when truffles stopped by my page. It's Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning, and that is above my intelligence level. The concept is in using past high-paid posts as 'training material' for the bot to identify similar posts that are live on steemit.
Some of the things looked at are:
'I used some features that encode the style of the posts, such as number of paragraphs, average words per sentence, or spelling mistakes.'
An estimation is then calculated.
I don't think social factors are used in the consideration, like who you know and what circle of friends you may have, bid-bots used, etc, etc.
That's about all I can say on this one. Python is programming, and that's more Andy's expertise.

You have to be active first off. Secondly I would recommend joining some curating and post-promotion Discord groups. Thesteemengine is a good one that I belong to and there are some VERY active members there.
I know you said you were gone for a short time, so you may have flown under the radar of your following now. You need to make a post as soon as you're able to to let them know you're back and give them an update about maybe what things you'll be posting about; giving them a sneak peek may have them watching for you again.
