Design & Build metal and wood shoji influenced doors.
Hello steemians
So today I’m gonna take a bunch of scrap wood and rusted metal and make a shoji influence sliding bypass door system.
Design influences can come from anywhere. Even on a construction jobsite. I like the random lines also making it random makes each door unique and also adds depth and texture.
So we are going to carry this same theme into shoji style doors to separate the media room from the kitchen. Shoji doors close when you have guests staying over. And leave open when it’s being used for a media room. When I design floor plan layouts flexible rooms and partitions make a smaller foot print home more usable. And always I place the kitchen in the center of the layout as the kitchen is the heart of the home.
I wish I had more pics during the metal fabrication part. As I’m a cheap bastard and didn’t want to pay for more iCloud storage. Lol
But basically I used 3/8 flat bar and I framed it with tack welds first. Then I lay the solid 1/4 steel bars after sanding off the rust. In random layouts.
I make sure the flat bar frame is square. Then tack weld on the 1:4 solid bar. I do not weld the intersections where the random bars meet until I box frame the metal frame with reclaimed wood.
Then I do the final welds on all metal intersections and corners on the flat bar frame.
below is after the wood has been sanded down with a orbital sander. And box framed around the metal frame. Now it’s ready for stain and flat black spray paint.
Now since the shoji doors are next to a kitchen. I felt real shoji paper wouldn't be durable enough.
So I went with a fiberglass material called Synskin. It’s durable washable and adds more privacy as the shadows behind are more blurry.
Here they are with synskin installed with double sided tape and clear silicone caulking on edges where it meets the wooden frame.
Partition doors closed.
More Partition doors I made fully opened in the master bedroom
Below are the doors in a professional shot photo

Interesting design - you've successfully combined Shoji and Fusuma (heavier sliding doors. Great job.
Living in Japan, I have shoji in three rooms (though on the outer walls covering windows) and fusuma between my kitchen and dining room. They certainly don't look as cool as yours. My wife and I are always looking out for sharp, unique ways to improve our home - following you is a start.
thanks...and i always want input of functionality, design...and constructive criticism
Wow! This is really nice! I love the designs for the shoji doors, really unique.
