Diese Probefahrt hat uns mehr beschäftigt, als wir vorher gedacht hätten. Eigentlich wollten wir nur schauen, wie sich der neue Renault Twingo E-Tech fährt. Am Ende standen wir aber vor einer viel größeren Frage: Entscheidet man bei einem Auto mit dem Herzen oder mit dem Kopf?

This test drive stayed in our minds longer than we expected. Actually, we only wanted to see how the new Renault Twingo E-Tech drives. In the end, however, we found ourselves facing a much bigger question: do you choose a car with your heart or with your head?

Es gibt Autos, die erklären sich über Zahlen. Man schaut auf Reichweite, Akku, Ausstattung und Preis, dann versucht man nüchtern zu entscheiden. Und dann gibt es Autos, die machen es einem schwerer. Nicht, weil sie perfekt sind, sondern weil sie einen im ersten Moment einfach erwischen.

There are cars that explain themselves through numbers. You look at range, battery, equipment and price, then you try to make a rational decision. And then there are cars that make things more difficult. Not because they are perfect, but because they catch you in the very first moment.

Genau so ein Auto stand diesmal vor uns: der Renault Twingo E-Tech. Klein, grün, rundlich, freundlich und mit diesem gewissen Etwas, das man nicht sofort in eine Preisliste schreiben kann.

That is exactly the kind of car we had in front of us this time: the Renault Twingo E-Tech. Small, green, rounded, friendly and with that special something you cannot simply write into a price list.

Schon beim ersten Blick war klar, dass Renault hier nicht einfach nur einen kleinen elektrischen Stadtwagen bauen wollte. Dieser Twingo spielt bewusst mit Erinnerungen. Man erkennt die Idee des alten Twingo wieder, aber nicht auf eine plumpe Art. Es wirkt eher so, als hätte jemand den alten Charme genommen, einmal kräftig durchgeschüttelt und in die Gegenwart geholt.

From the very first look, it was clear that Renault did not just want to build a small electric city car here. This Twingo deliberately plays with memories. You recognize the idea of the old Twingo again, but not in a clumsy way. It feels more like someone took the old charm, shook it up properly and brought it into the present.

Die Front wirkt freundlich, fast ein bisschen verspielt. Die Form ist eigenständig und die kleinen Details auf der Motorhaube passen wunderbar zum gesamten Auftritt. Gerade in Grün fällt der Wagen auf, ohne aufdringlich zu sein. Er steht nicht da wie ein Auto, das laut schreien muss. Er steht eher da wie einer, der genau weiß, dass man ihn sowieso anschaut.

The front looks friendly, almost a little playful. The shape is distinctive and the small details on the bonnet fit wonderfully with the overall appearance. Especially in green, the car stands out without being intrusive. It does not look like a car that has to shout loudly. It looks more like one that knows people will look at it anyway.

Und genau das passierte auch. Während der Probefahrt merkte man, dass der kleine Renault Blicke sammelt. Menschen schauen hin. Nicht, weil er riesig oder besonders teuer wirkt, sondern weil er anders ist. Er hat ein Gesicht, eine Ausstrahlung und diesen kleinen Retro Funken, der sofort hängen bleibt.

And that is exactly what happened. During the test drive, we noticed that the little Renault collects glances. People look at it. Not because it looks huge or especially expensive, but because it is different. It has a face, a presence and that little retro spark that immediately stays in your mind.

Für meine Frau war der erste Eindruck auf jeden Fall stark. Der Kleine hatte gute Karten. Sehr gute sogar.

For my wife, the first impression was definitely strong. The little one had good chances. Very good ones, in fact.

Doch dann kam der Teil, bei dem ein Auto zeigen muss, ob es mehr kann als gut aussehen. Eine Probefahrt ist immer ein kleiner Realitätstest. Man setzt sich hinein, fährt los und plötzlich zählt nicht mehr nur das Design. Dann geht es darum, ob man sich wohlfühlt, ob alles passt und ob man dem Auto im Alltag vertrauen würde.

But then came the part where a car has to show whether it can do more than just look good. A test drive is always a small reality check. You get in, drive off and suddenly the design is no longer the only thing that matters. Then it is about whether you feel comfortable, whether everything fits and whether you would trust the car in everyday life.

Meine Frau hatte dabei einen interessanten Vergleich. Sie ist dienstlich schon das Vorgängermodell gefahren und konnte deshalb sehr gut einschätzen, was sich anders anfühlt. Genau solche Vergleiche sind manchmal ehrlicher als jedes Prospekt, denn man merkt sofort, wenn sich etwas nicht so anfühlt, wie man es erwartet hat.

My wife had an interesting comparison here. She had already driven the previous model for work, so she could judge very well what felt different. Such comparisons are sometimes more honest than any brochure, because you immediately notice when something does not feel the way you expected it to.

Der erste Punkt war die Lenkung. Sie empfand sie als deutlich schwerer. Gerade bei einem kleinen Stadtauto erwartet man eigentlich, dass alles leicht von der Hand geht. Rangieren, Wenden, Einparken, das sollte entspannt funktionieren. Meine Frau sagte ziemlich klar, dass ein lockeres Einparken mit einer Hand dadurch schwieriger wird.

The first point was the steering. She felt it was noticeably heavier. Especially in a small city car, you actually expect everything to feel light and easy. Maneuvering, turning, parking, all of that should work in a relaxed way. My wife said quite clearly that easy one handed parking would be more difficult because of that.

Dann kam die Sitzposition dazu. Sie sitzt im neuen Twingo tiefer, als es ihr lieb war. Dadurch konnte sie den Anfang vom Fahrzeug nicht richtig sehen. Für manche mag das nach einer Kleinigkeit klingen, aber wer täglich fährt, weiß genau, dass solche Dinge wichtig sind. Ein Auto kann noch so klein sein, wenn man sich beim Rangieren nicht sicher fühlt, bleibt ein ungutes Gefühl zurück.

Then came the seating position. She sits lower in the new Twingo than she would like. Because of that, she could not really see the beginning of the car. For some people, that may sound like a small detail, but anyone who drives every day knows exactly that such things matter. A car can be as small as it wants, but if you do not feel confident while maneuvering, an uneasy feeling remains.

Damit war die erste Begeisterung nicht weg, aber sie bekam einen kleinen Knick. Aus dem spontanen „Oh, der ist aber schön“ wurde ein vorsichtigeres „Ja, schön ist er, aber…“.

That did not make the first excitement disappear, but it gave it a small dent. The spontaneous “Oh, that one is beautiful” became a more careful “Yes, it is beautiful, but…”

Und genau dieses „aber“ ist bei einer Probefahrt oft entscheidend.

And exactly that “but” is often decisive during a test drive.

Der Twingo E-Tech ist natürlich kein Auto, das man als großen Reisewagen betrachten sollte. Er ist für die Stadt gedacht, für kurze Wege, Einkauf, Arbeitsweg und den normalen Alltag. Mit seinem kleinen Akku und einer Reichweite von rund 260 Kilometern passt er auf dem Papier genau in diese Rolle. Für viele Menschen reicht das völlig aus.

Of course, the Twingo E-Tech is not a car you should see as a big travel vehicle. It is meant for the city, for short distances, shopping, commuting and normal everyday life. With its small battery and a range of around 260 kilometers, it fits exactly into this role on paper. For many people, that is completely sufficient.

Aber bei so einem Auto geht es nicht nur darum, wie weit es fahren kann. Es geht darum, wie leicht es einem den Alltag macht. Gerade ein kleiner Stadtflitzer muss unkompliziert sein. Man möchte einsteigen, losfahren und nicht lange überlegen. Alles soll sich einfach anfühlen.

But with such a car, it is not only about how far it can drive. It is about how easy it makes everyday life. Especially a small city car has to be uncomplicated. You want to get in, drive off and not think too much. Everything should feel simple.

Nach der Fahrt kam dann der Moment, in dem die Emotionen kurz Pause machen müssen. Denn irgendwann steht man im Autohaus, schaut auf die Ausstattung und fragt sich: Was bekommen wir am Ende wirklich für unser Geld?

After the drive came the moment when emotions had to take a short break. Because at some point you are standing in the dealership, looking at the equipment and asking yourself: what do we really get for our money in the end?

Wir wollten keine Luxusausstattung. Uns ging es nicht darum, aus einem kleinen Twingo ein Auto mit allem Drum und Dran zu machen. Wir wollten eher eine ehrliche, vernünftige Ausstattung. Bei uns heißt das gerne die schlichte Fichte. Kein unnötiger Schnickschnack, aber die Dinge, die im Alltag wirklich helfen, sollten schon dabei sein.

We were not looking for luxury equipment. It was not about turning a small Twingo into a car with every possible extra. We wanted honest, sensible equipment. We like to call that the simple spruce. No unnecessary extras, but the things that really help in everyday life should be there.

Ein Punkt wurde dabei besonders wichtig: die Rückfahrkamera.

One point became especially important here: the rear view camera.

Bei der kleinen Heckscheibe, der tieferen Sitzposition und dem Wunsch nach einem sicheren Gefühl beim Einparken wäre sie für meine Frau kein Spielzeug. Sie wäre ein echter Alltagshelfer. Gerade wenn man ein kleines Auto kauft, erwartet man, dass Parken und Rangieren leicht fallen. Wenn dafür eine Kamera nötig ist, dann ist sie für uns nicht Luxus, sondern sinnvoll.

With the small rear window, the lower seating position and the desire for a safe feeling while parking, it would not be a toy for my wife. It would be a real everyday helper. Especially when buying a small car, you expect parking and maneuvering to be easy. If a camera is needed for that, then for us it is not luxury, but useful.

Und genau dort wird es spannend. Denn wenn man für solche Dinge in eine höhere Ausstattung gehen muss, sieht die Rechnung plötzlich anders aus. Der Twingo bleibt charmant, keine Frage. Aber der Preis wirkt dann nicht mehr nur nach kleinem Stadtwagen, sondern nach einer Entscheidung, bei der man genauer hinschauen muss.

And that is exactly where it becomes interesting. Because if you have to move to a higher trim level for such things, the calculation suddenly looks different. The Twingo remains charming, no question. But the price no longer feels only like a small city car, but like a decision where you have to look more closely.

Dazu kam, dass wir einen anderen Kandidaten nicht aus dem Kopf bekamen: den Leapmotor T03.

On top of that, we could not get another candidate out of our heads: the Leapmotor T03.

Der T03 ist kein Auto, das mit Retro spielt. Er löst nicht sofort dieses warme Gefühl aus, das der Twingo mit seinem Design schafft. Er wirkt nüchterner, sachlicher und auf den ersten Blick vielleicht weniger besonders. Aber er hat eine andere Stärke: Er bietet viel fürs Geld.

The T03 is not a car that plays with retro design. It does not immediately create that warm feeling the Twingo achieves with its design. It looks more sober, more practical and maybe less special at first glance. But it has another strength: it offers a lot for the money.

Und genau deshalb wurde der Vergleich für uns so interessant. Der Renault spricht das Herz an. Der Leapmotor spricht den Kopf an. Der eine sammelt Blicke, der andere sammelt Argumente.

And that is exactly why the comparison became so interesting for us. The Renault speaks to the heart. The Leapmotor speaks to the head. One collects glances, the other collects arguments.

Plötzlich ging es nicht mehr nur um zwei kleine Elektroautos. Es ging um die Frage, wie man überhaupt ein Auto auswählt. Lässt man sich vom Design tragen? Vom ersten Gefühl? Von diesem kleinen Moment, wenn man davor steht und denkt: Ja, der hat was?

Suddenly it was no longer just about two small electric cars. It became a question of how you choose a car in general. Do you let yourself be carried by the design? By the first feeling? By that little moment when you stand in front of it and think: yes, this one has something?

Oder sagt man sich: Schön ist gut, aber im Alltag zählen Ausstattung, Übersicht, Komfort und Preis am Ende mehr?

Or do you say to yourself: beautiful is good, but in everyday life, equipment, visibility, comfort and price matter more in the end?

Genau zwischen diesen beiden Gedanken standen wir nach der Probefahrt.

That is exactly where we stood after the test drive, between those two thoughts.

Der Twingo hat Eindruck gemacht. Er ist nicht langweilig, er ist nicht beliebig und er ist ganz sicher kein Auto, das man sofort wieder vergisst. Renault hat es geschafft, aus einem kleinen Elektroauto wieder etwas mit Persönlichkeit zu machen. Das muss man ihnen lassen.

The Twingo made an impression. It is not boring, it is not random and it is certainly not a car you immediately forget. Renault managed to make a small electric car feel like something with personality again. You have to give them that.

Aber Persönlichkeit allein reicht eben nicht immer. Meine Frau muss sich wohlfühlen. Sie muss sich sicher fühlen. Sie muss beim Einparken Vertrauen haben und darf nicht das Gefühl bekommen, dass sie sich an entscheidenden Punkten erst gewöhnen muss.

But personality alone is not always enough. My wife has to feel comfortable. She has to feel safe. She needs confidence while parking and should not feel that she first has to get used to important points.

Am Ende blieb deshalb keine klare Entscheidung, sondern eine ehrliche Frage.

In the end, there was no clear decision, but an honest question.

Nimmt man den Twingo, weil er einfach diesen besonderen Charme hat und weil er auf der Straße sofort auffällt? Oder schaut man nüchtern auf das Gesamtpaket und fragt sich, ob der T03 für ähnliches Geld nicht mehr Alltag bietet?

Do you take the Twingo because it simply has that special charm and because it immediately stands out on the street? Or do you look calmly at the whole package and ask yourself whether the T03 does not offer more everyday value for similar money?

Diese Frage blieb nach der Probefahrt hängen.

That question stayed with us after the test drive.

Meine Frau war kurz davor, sich vom kleinen Renault einfangen zu lassen. Die Optik, die Farbe, der Auftritt und die Reaktionen auf der Straße sprachen alle für ihn. Aber ein Auto muss nicht nur beim Anschauen Freude machen. Es muss auch dann überzeugen, wenn man damit jeden Tag unterwegs ist.

My wife was close to being caught by the little Renault. The looks, the color, the appearance and the reactions on the street all spoke in its favor. But a car must not only bring joy when you look at it. It also has to convince you when you use it every day.
