Develop new drugs to treat diabetes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - American researchers have successfully developed new drugs of type 2 diabetes that do not cause side effects such as those caused by existing drugs, most notably nausea and vomiting.
The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Syracuse in the United States, presented its results Tuesday to the annual meeting of the Florida-based Catalytic Behavioral Society meeting on July 17-21.
Current diabetes medications often lead to many annoying side effects, mainly nausea and vomiting, which reduce the quality of patients' lives.
All drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of diabetes cause nausea and vomiting between 20% and 50% of patients, they said.
To overcome this problem, the team succeeded in modifying the active compound in existing drugs, a compound called exendin-4, by binding each molecule to vitamin B12, and producing a less absorbent compound in brain regions that cause nausea and vomiting.
The team tested the new drug on animals with Type 2 diabetes and found it effective in reducing blood sugar levels, such as conventional drugs, but without causing side effects.
The researchers also found that the animals that took the # new drug were only 9% of the side effects of diabetes drugs, nausea and vomiting, compared to 90% of those who took traditional medicines.
