I am also conflicted in this issue but if you look at the bigger picture and see the consumption of the institution cryptocurrencies are trying to replace than you realize this is a the lesser evil. Of course they can always do away with the POW algorithm and just go for POS or DPOS.  Of Course when you do that a whole new problem will arise. We will just cross the bridge when we get there.
