I am also conflicted in this issue but if you look at the bigger picture and see the consumption of the institution cryptocurrencies are trying to replace than you realize this is a the lesser evil. Of course they can always do away with the POW algorithm and just go for POS or DPOS. Of Course when you do that a whole new problem will arise. We will just cross the bridge when we get there.
but only the mining not for the bitcoin itself ... also ... do you know that there are only less than 3 million coins left for mine?
