All new additions to the temple must be sterilized

in #dogs4 days ago

An unfortunate part of Thai culture is a lack of awareness about the need for animal sterilization. I try not to be too judgmental but the way here seems to be to let the dogs replicate like mad and then when they become a nuisance to push them off on a local temple, normally just dropping them off there in the night and forgetting about them. Monks will look after them even if they do not have the resources to do so. This is a very normal part of Thai temple life and no matter which temple you go to in Thailand, there are always a ton of stray dogs at all temples.

Over the years we have worked out a partnership with the various temples so that the monks will alert us when a new dog is dropped off.

Since we normally only have the resources to sterilize the females, it is very important for us to be alerted about any new additions, especially females as soon as it happens.

Normally it is quite easy for us to get new additions into kennels for transport because the dogs that have recently been dropped off are normally very familiar with being handled by humans. This is handy, but also quite tragic. It 's tragic because these poor animals have clearly learned to trust humans even though the humans they trusted in the past betrayed them and abandoned them without looking back. In the years that I have been doing this, there has only ever been one or two people that later turned back up at the temple looking to take their dog back home. Of course they pretended that the dog was lost even though in one of the situations a nearby CCTV revealed that they were dropped off by car in the middle of the night.

We were happy to let it go back with them in that situation anyway though and I hope things worked out.

For this new one at the temple it was extremely easy to gain her trust and transport her to the medical center for her operation.

Maybe I talk about this too much but I only do so because I really want the world to understand this. The largest problem facing the stray dog population almost anywhere isn't disease or hunger, it is that they will quickly over-populate anywhere they end up if not sterilized. taking care of this and preventing it from happening is an extremely inexpensive operation and a lot of rescue operations such as our own will offer it for free to anyone that wants it.

This little lovely thing was very kind and easy to handle. Even once the kennel door was open she would normally hesitate to come out even though nothing was stopping her from doing so. Thankfully, this wasn't because of fear, she was never shaking or nervous. She was probably just very confused because her life has changed so much in the past few days.

We do not know where she came from or who left her here and we normally do not pursue obtaining this information. We do know that we are going to provide her with as good of a life as we can at the Tiger Cave Temple and the monks there work with us to make sure that all the dogs have food and clean water as well as enough shelter to stay out of the sun and rain during various times of year. This dog hasn't gotten a name yet but normally the monks will come up with something since they end up spending the most time with them.

Welcome to your new life little girl. We will work as hard as we can to make it as good as we can and who knows? Maybe an adoption is waiting for you just around the next corner.
