The Birth of my Skull Dog Character

in #drawing7 years ago

Hello Steemit, I wanted to show you some of the beginning drawings of a recurring character I've drawn. I'm not one for many characters, nor do I tend to create stories to go along with them, but I do love to draw skulls.

This was watercolor on glass. I made it for a print in high school, but ended up liking it on glass better than the actual print. I liked the study on the skull, with the toothy smile. I went further onto my tablet and made a creepy skull-character.

I didn't consider it a character at the time, just a fun thing to draw, but it times of stress I found myself going back to it.

I liked to play with the features, giving it a 3rd eye, extra heads, different fur patterns.

I didn't create it for a story, rather I think I created it to use as an outlet for my emotions. The toothy smile worked like a mask to me, where I could incorporate other things like body language or putting emotion into the rest of the composition. I have many more pictures of this guy to show you, but I think I'll save them for more posts. My favorite deserves it's own post I think.

Thanks for taking a look! Let me know if you've had similar or different experiences as an artist, or if this has spoken to you as a viewer!

Very nice drawings, my favorite is the one whith the bird and roses , it reminds some feelings off loss.. someone or something dear as passed away, still life will allways find a way off turning something sad into another beautyfull realisation... thanks for sharing.

Thanks! In a weird way, that was kind of a memorial drawing (ended up being a paining) for a lot dead birds I saw. My high school had tons of large windows which killed hundreds of birds a year. The drawing sort of helped me process the meaning of death and why it happens. Thanks a lot for telling me what you thought about it! It's cool to see how other people perceive my art.

You are welcome!

Very evocative and beautiful. My favorite was... All of them! I'm looking forward to seeing more renditions of him.

Thanks! you'll definitely see more :)

Iv never been one to draw specific characters either. I wondered how you would make this not-a-character character have character, if you follow ;p
I was pleasantly surprised at how much you made each skull feel like its own thaing, yet all feel like the same entity.

Also, awesome drawings! I love the darker side of art in general. There are some great artists hanging around Steemit.

Thanks! I tend to stray away from O.C. like characters. I'd rather have one for an emotional tool haha. I'm hesitant to name it, or give it a gender in case those might restrict it's ability to form a variety of messages.

I'm excited to meet other artists here!
