We Should think for ourselves

We are quietly pushed to conform daily, are you aware of that?

Our apps give us opinions, making us believe that we have come up with such ideas entirely on our own, without any outside influence. But to become true intellectuals, we need to step back and try to develop our own opinions and thoughts, which would mean going against the herd thinking. This is not an easy thing but is important for a good life.

Even more difficult than developing personal opinions is respecting the same freedom in other people.

The moment a person with whom you do not agree comes in contact, there is an automatic tendency to convince the person to accept your point of view. You tend to believe that you are only sharing the truth. But what you fail to accept is that the person has a right to think differently. This is because everybody has had different experiences that shape their views about the world. If there are true intellectuals, they should encourage others to develop their thoughts and ideas, whether they agree with those thoughts and ideas or not.

If we want to respect human being's mind, we have to give people the space to develop their opinions and beliefs. Respect for opinion is exactly what freedom of speech is all about.

After all, we need some time to learn and grow intellectually. So others must have the same freedom to speak. Intellectual independence should not be limited to our own thoughts, it needs to be extended to all people.

The moment we understand that it is not necessary to force our beliefs on other people, a healthy intellectual space naturally comes up. No more useless arguments will happen, meaningful discussions will happen. Let us focus on becoming better versions of ourselves and leave everybody else to do the same. And in our respect for other opinions we'll open up for views that could be better than ours.
