A Heartbreak
Walking through a paved narrow path, concrete slabs surrounded by cages, some of them visibly empty and others that also look empty. The volunteer mentioned robins , many of them, housed alongside other compatible bird species in large aviaries meant to mimic a more realistic ecosystem. All we see are the rocks and trees.
We believe you.
Among the students, Cherie is lagging. She doesn't feel too good. She has neither the appetite nor the change for the chews. The trip came as a surprise, so how could she have accounted for it. Money comes and goes, comes through parents and goes, and yes, it goes through her. Despite the pocket money spent, confident she was to get some dough at the breakfast table, but before she could even muster any words, her mother inquired about the medicine, whether she had taken it or not.

Reasoning her way out of it, being on a trip with an ongoing illness, wouldn't work. Rather she would be in much more trouble.
I don't need it. This will make me better, she says sarcastically, pointing to the lentil soup and the sage tea in front of her.
Her mother's tone like opening a freezer door, cold. She was not having it.
Okay, I'll take it.
As she managed to find a spot, her herd of peers also accumulated around her, and their bandit leader who commands them.
If she could have taken her medicine she would, realizing the sweat, whether from the heat or the sickness, was nudging her make-up.
Realizing he walks past her, she sits not looking clueless. She looks down knowing he is standing beside her.
A heart like swimming floats that he can't control.
A voice. Would you like something.
A heartbreak.
