Doing the thinking

In attempting to offload thinking and other burdens to machines, AI chat bots and autonomous thinking systems, we hoped to get more time, space and less burdens. To an extent, we believed machines would do the thinking for us. What is the thinking offloaded to machines for us, anyway?

There are consequences to this thinking surrender, and they are unfortunate consequences.

Machines are and will always be, the product of human ingenuity. We determine the degree of automation and more importantly, the philosophy behind the automation. We decide how much autonomy will be afforded to users, how much data will be collected, how decisions will be made and the extent of control users will be able to exercise. Machines are now control.

True automation should be rewarded with autonomy. Actively relinquishing control should not be the results to automation. Things never designed for user autonomy should not be relied upon for user freedom.

The thinking we surrendered to machines was never a burden. The relinquishing of self constraint was the only real burden. The minute you stop questioning, analyzing and drawing your own conclusions, you don't become liberated.

I'm not anti technology at all. I appreciate technology and without our I couldn't even share my opinions online because no technology, no being online.

The tools are not the issue, the withdrawal is. The relinquishing control of your own system of thought is only a problem if there is a vacuum to be filled and the convenience of the system is not a problem. Comfort is the mechanism, it allways has been.

The thinking machines' original architects never stopped thinking. In fact they thought with more complexity. All they needed was for you to stop and you did. All of this on a voluntary basis of course.

The machine didn't do the thinking for you, you did the thinking and the machine just processed your response.

The only way back is the same way it's always been. You start to think for yourself. Even when a tool is offering you an easier answer because the moment you stop thinking, someone else will. And they won't be thinking about your interests.

AI is a logical progression... Abacuses, slide rules, pocket calculators, computers – they were all cutting-edge in their day, and they were criticised too: for leading to laziness and a dumbing-down of society. Well – today, entirely new technological possibilities called ChatGPT or Gemini or Grok or whatever... are being met by soft, lazy little people. They’re raving about this rubbish! I’m now afraid of the future (for my children and grandchildren) and don’t think it’s simply a matter of needing a wake-up call.

I have the fear that wake up call time is gone, some might see the need to use their thinking but to most, if there's a easy way out they'll use it and AI seems to be mother of Easy Way Outs.
