Better Life

He was just eight when his father died, everything relied on his mother, who did her best in trying to take care of him. When the boy was at the age of fourteen she had to work all day and night for him. When her husband died, she had to stop sleeping and smiling properly, working so hard to make her son happy.

Since then, everything in his life was down to the basics. The more he worked, the more food there was. When he was sixteen, unlike others of his age enjoying their youth, he already carried newspapers in the mornings and washed clothes throughout the day. Sometimes, he had to stay and work some extra time because the shop owner never wanted to see his workers leave early. No matter how hard the work was and how much was done by eight o'clock, he still made him work two more hours.

He never complained because, he knew from his own life, having no money was much worse than not getting rest. Sometimes, seeing boys of his age playing in the streets dressed well and riding their bikes, talking about dating and going to college, hurt him inside. It was not because he hated them but because all his life he kept wondering why everything happened differently to him. He did not dream of becoming rich but wanted a normal and calm life.

Before the death of his mother, she gave him advice saying that nobody stayed poor forever and that God always hid chances in hard times. These words helped him see his life in a different way. From then on, instead of crying about his problems, he started noticing other things and thinking that maybe some chance was also lying somewhere deep inside his hard working life.

This particular evening was especially hard because he finished working by ten and on his usual bike he returned home tired, hungry and bitter. Being alone with his thoughts on the quiet streets of the city, he kept wondering whether all his days would be like that in the future.

He did not know that everything was about to change a lot the next morning.
