The customer is the final boss

Customers have always been the one with the ultimate power. Most have just never known it.

Businesses of all sizes, all shapes and all perceived levels of “untouchability” function based on one principle. Dollars from people who decide to purchase their goods or services, end of story. No customers = no revenue. No revenue = no employees paid. No employees paid = it all goes down like a house of cards.

Neither the CEO, nor the board of directors pay the electricity bill, you do.

People by nature move their spending around quicker than companies can catch up. Slow month = bad quarter. Bad quarter = layoffs. Layoffs = “your once favorite company” goes out of business before you even realized it. This is the story of life. Most don't realize the power is in their hands as customers though.

Once you know, it’s pretty fucking clear.

Sure, the CEO answers to shareholders and investors and not you but without customers there are no investors. Remove customers and they’re all going to jump ship too. It all comes back to who? The consumer.

It looks like a correlation I'm doing but it’s actually just math.

Companies hire focus groups, do surveys, interview, coddle, all that to figure out how to best please you. Not because they’re nice. Because if people stop buying they know what happens.

You’ve never thought you had that kind of power. Most customers never feel like they do. One individual consumer out there spending millions of dollars doesn’t feel like collective power. But collective spending doesn’t need to be organized to be collective. Millions of people deciding what to buy or pay for is what shapes industries.

Businesses don’t go under because you quit buying. They go under when enough people decide to stop buying.
