The Dance of Light and Shadows : An Introduction
This is a rewrite of the Harry Potter sage and it will be a trilogy. It's first installment, which I will call "Toil and Trouble" will include the pre-Hogwarts years of our main characters, followed by the first four years of Hogwarts.
I'll be posting the first chapter of Toil and Touble soon.
But before I do that, I must reveal some of the changes I've made to Hogwarts in this universe. They are as follows.
Hogwarts's first year begins when students are thirteen, instead of eleven years old. The same applies to wand eligibility. In my opinion, children should be allowed to carry wands and use magic only after they've reached their teenage years.
The student population at Hogwarts is roughly 1000. This means each House has roughly 250 students, and each year of each house has about 35. I know JK Rowling has gone back and forth on this, but I'd like to stick to 1000.
Each House at Hogwarts has its own Tower. The Slytherin Tower to the South, right next to the Black Lake. The Gryffindore Tower to the North. The Ravenclaw Tower to the East. And the Hufflepuff Tower to the West.
Each year of each house has its own floor. The first floor for first years, the second floor for second years and so on. The ground floor is for administrative staff, storage etc. The Head of House has an apartment on the Eighth Floor.
Each floor in the House Towers has dormitories for boys and girls, a common room where studends can gather, study together etc., and Matron's Quarter.
Each House has its own Common Hall. It is located in the basement of their tower. Detention cells are also in the basements.
Instead of a Head Girl and a Head Boy, Hogwarts has a Captain for each House. The House Captain is selected every year from amongst sixth and seventh year prefects, in a magical ceremony that is held in the House Common Hall.
Fourth Year or older students are chosen as prefects. Four students are chosen from each year, of each house. This means that at any given point of time, there are 64 prefects at Hogwarts. 16 from each House.
The Prefect’s Council assigns prefect duties, resolves those inter-House disputes that don't require the involvement of the teachers. House Captains serve as Presidents of the Prefect's Council, and the presidency rotates monthly.
Hogwarts's has junior and senior Quidditch teams. The junior teams consist of second, third and fourth years students. While the senior teams have fifth, sixth and seventh years. Because second years and seventh years on the same team is a recipe for disaster.
Argus Filch is not a "caretaker". Instead, he is Dumbledore's administrative assistant. He helps the Headmaster with paperwork, manages his appointments etc.
In the Main Academic Wing, each subject has a separate classroom for each year. And each subject is taught by more than one teacher. For example, Transfiguration is taught by three different individuals - first to third years, fourth and fifth years, and the sixth and seventh years professors.
The Defence Against the Dark Arts position is no longer cursed. And Hogwarts has four DADA professors. A Wizard as skilled as Dumbledore should be able to break a curse placed by Tom Riddle all those years ago.
The Hogwarts library has its own Tower and it is the largest magical Library in all of Europe. It has several floors and is managed by several
librarians.
This is a Dramione (Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy romance) story. However, it'll take years for Draco and Hermione to get together. So, be prepared for a slow burn.
I'm writing the story I would have liked to read. I'm creating the universe that makes sense to me. However, I am open to all suggestions and constructive criticism. So please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments.
I do hope that you'll enjoy reading this trilogy just as much as I'm sure I'll enjoy writing it.
I hope you are successful in reconstructing the story.
Thank you.
