Contest: "Can't Sleep..." ?

- Happy Family...
It was a big happy family Joan was married her love Jim and they had wonderful two children, both were girls. The older daughter Marie was 6 and the younger Sami turned 4 just about a week ago. Both girls were like the best friends always playing together and often if one was somewhere then the second was not very far away. The girls were happy little cute angels and both Joan and Jim could not believe their happiness and happy family. They had everything that one could wish and hoped that everything will be like that forever.
- Accident...
One day the girls were playing outside at pool, that is usually had a metal fence that was locked but yesterday evening when Joan and Jim spent their evening at pool they forgot to close it. The girls noticed that immediately and while playing Sami slipped on wet edge of pool and landed in water. She could not swim and once in water he became very anxious and tried to gasp for air. Marie run inside of house to call for parents but when they arrived it was too late. Sami was on the bottom of pool. Despite of all attempt to resuscitate Sami it was too late. Sami was gone.
- Night guest...
Since Sami’s death nothing was like before Joan lost her love to live but she knew that she has to live for Jim and Marie. She was there and function like a machine, preparing meals, bringing Marie to school but it was not life, both Kim and Marie knew that and tried to do everything to make Joan happy.
One night when Jim was on his business trip and Joan was sleeping, she woke up from touch on her shoulder and familiar voice called:
- “Mum, I can’t sleep, may I sleep in your bed?”
Joan was too tired to open her eyes and just said:
- “Yes, darling” and opened her blanket inviting her daughter under her blanket.
Next moment she just felt cold little body and thought:
- “You are freezing darling” and tried to give her a hug to warm her up.
In the morning when Joan woke up, she could not find anyone in her bed and thought that Marie just went back to her room.
The day was ordinary as always. When she asked Marie when she left her bed Marie just said that she does not remember that she was in her bed and happily run away. Joan was a bit confused but then thought that she might have had a dream and everything was just normal.
- Who are you?...
The next night Joan was waken up again by the same touch and the same voice asked again:
- “Mum, I can’t sleep, may I sleep in your bed?”
Joan immediately woke up and saw her little Sami who was there, wet and cold. She could not trust her eyes and asked:
“Is it really you, honey”
“Yes, it is me, mummy and I am so cold, can I climb into your bed?” Joan said:
“Yes, of course, I missed you so much”
Joan took Sami into her arms and hold her in her arms so tight and wrapped her into blanket to warm her up. The next what she could remember is that it was morning.
The next night everything happened again. Joan was speaking to Sami and also they played and laughed. In the morning she felt happy but very tired and had no energy.
One night when she was asleep with Sami, she felt someone’s hand on her shoulder, when she opened her eyes she saw her older daughter Marie, who was not able to sleep and was at her bed.
Marie asked: “Can I sleep in your bed, mummy?”
Joan answered: “Sorry honey but I have already Sami sleeping here” and opened blanket.
In this moment she was shocked, it was not Sami but an old doll that was favourite doll of Sami. In this moment that understood that the short time of happiness that she had seeing her little girl was just a dream and now she is in reality and their Sami is gone and there is no way back...

Such a touching and heartfelt take on the original prompt. The way you’ve woven a mother’s grief into the story gives the twist an even deeper impact than the nightmare version. With just a little polishing of the language and perhaps a slightly sharper ending, this piece could shine even more. Beautifully done!

Thank you @soulfuldreamer, I absolutely agree with your opinion, it was sounding good but something was not there. Often we have those stories in our imagination and it is a kind of art to put it on paper and to make it so good that a person who reads can feel the same.

Your story evokes more than horror, it evokes a lot of pain and sadness. It's beautifully told and written. There's nothing in this world worse than the loss of a loved one.
