Lucid Dreaming, the Hype VS the Reality
To Fly
A Short Poem by @imjustsaying
Oh, what elation it is to fly,
to taste of the sunbeams up on high.
Weightlessly moving through the cloud,
eager to discover beyond it’s shroud.
Excitement is growing,
adrenaline starts flowing.
The world around begins to shatter,
awaking in bed with a full bladder.
Lucid Dreaming, the Hype VS the Reality
I can’t speak for anyone else, as I do not own one of those “Inception” dream machines, and have not had the luxury of visiting another’s dream world. I’ve only briefly researched lucid dreaming, mainly because as far back as I can remember, I’ve been one.
For all you non-lucid dreamers out there, regardless of what the many products marketed to “train” one to achieve this dream state, it’s not really all that it’s cracked up to be. I’ll go over a few of the main selling points.
You Can Fly.
Yes, you can learn to fly. You may need to sit in a box and believe that the box will allow you to float, then believe that It will allow you to fly. After a while you will be able to discard the useless box as it’s just a figment of your imagination anyways. Eventually you will be able to float on your own(Self High Five!!!), but flying comes rather quickly once you begin to realize that its all in your head.
- Note: Just don’t try to fly fast like superman, or else you will just wind up at your destination without experiencing the joys of the journey.
You Can Have... err “Do Stuff” With Anyone You Want.
This is probably the biggest “selling point” I have seen when looking into these products, or seeing people try to teach others how to do it. I would rather not delve into this little ditty, but I couldn’t ignore it. What I will say is, sure you can “do things” with people who would have zero interest in doing said things with you in real life. Just remember, you're actually doing them with an aspect of your subconscious(Just let that thought fester a bit.). There is a big difference between natural dreams of this sort and self manifest ones. When it comes time to see them face to face, your little secret may come to haunt you, just because it was in a dream doesn’t mean that our actions have no effect deep in your subconscious.
- Note: If you think you're going to “conjurer” up the likes of Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, just don’t be surprised if half way though your “doing stuff” they turn into a demon and bite off your man or lady bits. It’s probably safer to just have a bit of fun with the likes of the lunch lady or janitor whom you may naturally come across in your dream.
You Can Murder Your Arch Nemesis.
Now I have partaken in my fair share of dream battles, be it with guns or swords. I’ve never taken the road of murder. Even in a dream it just feels wrong. Perhaps it’s due to how I felt every time I was murdered in my own dreams. I’ve been stabbed, shot, drowned, and thrown to my death, I’m pretty sure I’ve never been thrown out an airlock in space, but hey, I got a lot of dreaming left to do, I’ll try not to give up hope.
- Note: Please don’t become a dream murderer, I feel like it’s just one step away from… well you know.
You Can Do Whatever You Want.
This is somewhat true, it just turns out that if you fiddle with your subconscious, it tends to fiddle back. The more you mess with your dreams, the less impact you actually have. I’ll give you an example from when I was maybe twelve.
There I was staring at some sort of monster approaching, I didn’t really feel like dying that night and had just learned how to “conjurer up” items. So I thought.
“Screw this monster, I’ll just give myself a gun.”
So I thought about it, and the next moment I had a very pretty semi automatic nickel plated .45 with ivory hand grips(Must have been something I had seen in a movie.) in my hands.
“Sweet, this should make short work of him.”
I took aim, pulled the trigger. But nothing. So I cocked the pistol to find out that it was missing a magazine.
“Shoot” (I was pretty good at not swearing, back then)
So then I “conjured up” a magazine full of copper coated bullets. I loaded and cocked the hand gun, took aim. By this point the monster was uncomfortably close to me. I squeezed the trigger, just to find out that I lacked the strength to pull it back.
After the slightest of heart attacks, I awoke in my bed
I suppose the moral of the story is, lucid dreaming can be exciting, but you best not get too excited about it, lest you find yourself awake in bed with a jacked up R.E.M. cycle.
I not really sure if this is “funny enough” or if it’s even funny at all but regardless this is my submission to @comedyopenmic round 5. I would have preferred to do something different, but I have little time these days and it will probably be several weeks, if not months before I’m able to set up my studio, which hopefully will allow for a bit more ease in doing some video/audio stuff. Time is a precious, rare commodity when you have babies and work to wrestle with.
I would love to see @carlgnash and @markangeltrueman (two of my favorite Curie curators), get in touch with their silly side and submit something for this competition.
I would also like to thank @nobyeni and @diebitch from @thewritersblock who were the ones who brought this competition to my awareness. Best of luck ladies with your submissions.
A special thanks to the judges, curators and sponsors of Comedyopenmice round 5:

Just another kiwi stopping in to say hi :) Hadn't heard of Lucid Dreaming before so I learned something tonight :) Thanks for sharing
Well I'm glad that you did stop by. If I did a post on how much I learned on Steemit, Well I'd be out of bandwidth for sure. :)
A very lucid post
It's not very funny though. lol Maybe that's what makes it so funny to me. Is there something wrong with me?
I know the feeling
I used to dream I was able to fly a lot when I was young. I miss that.
I dream of going around in circles now, I wonder why.....
Well at least it's not dreaming about have a full day of work just to wake up and do it again. That is probably the worst sort of dream. I think I would prefer to a have a night of being slain over and over again. Its sad how "They" seem to be able to get in and keep us running the rat race even in our sleep.
Yea, and dreaming about dreaming about working before working is even worse! :-P
And it's comments like this my friend, that remind me we are friends. Ohh nice belly chuckle from this one.
Dreaming of work...!!! Yuck....
Yeah, I remember once. I was on watch for twelve hours, just to wake up to find out I had to start my twelve hour watch. Man, that was one of the top ten worst days of my life.
I've had some very realistic dreams but I've never been able to fly in them.
That primarily only comes once the dreamer becomes aware they are dreaming. Then the laws of physics no longer apply, as it's a world within your mind. I'm not really sure what dreams are like for others, but I've had this ability since I was very young.
On occasion I do have dreams that I do not gain the consciousness of dreaming, I rather enjoy these dreams. That way I can just sit back and watch the dream, and see what the dream reveals. That is the primary curse of "lucid dreaming," your own interactions tend to get in the way of the dream, rendering the dream in large part meaningless.
As people say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Yeah, most people who want to lucid dream, they want to do it, because of the ability to fuck someone's brains out! LOL
While it does sound great, I myself want to do it for a different purpose - self improvement. It's said that you can improve real life skills in lucid dreams. Don't know if that's true, but I'm on a mission to experiment with that and find out if it's really possible!
It may very well be able to. After learning to fly and what not in the "dream world", sometime I wonder if I "truly" believed it, I would be able to do the same thing here. I don't know as there is to much "doubt" when I'm in the "real world."
But I got to say "doing stuff" in dreams while perhaps is enjoyable, it is nothing like the real thing. In dreams it is all about one's self satisfaction, for it's just one party involved with their own fantasy/fantasies. While the real thing is two individuals joining together becoming one for a moment in time. This is very much underplayed in pop culture and media but it is certainly a very real occurrence, and no dream could ever compare with it.
I think that it's funny...mixed in with some seriousness doesn't change the effect; makes it even funnier at times.
By the way...I just woke up from a nap a short while ago before checking your post, and I 'had' a lucid dream...weird. I was visited by a little girl from my third grade class (all grown up though) In third grade, she newly arrived to our classroom from Italy and did not speak English...She seemed so shy and humble. I made friends with her to try and make her feel more comfortable.
In my dream, I had stepped out onto my back porch at night, and from out of the darkness Maria appeared as a full grown woman smiling at me. She walked up the steps to me and gave me a long tender hug...(then I woke up) Logged into steemit and found your 'dream' post...
Nice, It's funny how "synchronicity" seems to play into our lives once we begin to notice it.
Thanks for reading it my friend, I always love reading your thoughtful comments.
Yes...synchronicity abounds...we need to put some thought into the message when it comes.
I like your writing style! Reminds me I need to work on this skill again, no luck so far :/
