Bitcoin itself won't stay popular if it doesn't change in the way it works currently (slow, expensive to use).
But i don't think a government will ever get a real grasp on a Crypto/Blockchain-currency while maintaining it's value.
As a store of value, or digital gold, Bitcoin has its use. As a currency? Nope.
