HE WHO SOWS SPARINGLY WILL ALSO REAP SPARINGLY
“But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
2 Corinthians 9:6 (NKJV)
READ: 2 Corinthians 9:6–14
The beautiful thing about giving is that God gives back in multiple folds according to the proportion of what you have given (Luke 6:38). If you are generous and bountiful in your giving,
you surely will be rewarded alike (Proverbs 11:24; 2 Corinthians 9:6; Galatians 6:7).
Note:
• No one should be forced or coerced to give. Although you might be encouraged or admonished to give, you should not be forced or intimidated to do so (2 Corinthians 9:7).
• The giving should also be as you purpose in your heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
• It should not be done grudgingly but with cheerfulness (2 Corinthians 9:7).
• It should not be done out of necessity or compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:7). Although, for every believer who knows what he is doing and the importance of giving, it is a necessity.
• When you are being told or admonished or encouraged to give, do not be angry; it is for your good.
I have seen some pastors who do not teach their people about the importance of giving to God and His kingdom. Such pastors tell the people to give if they have, but should not bother if they do not have. That may sound good and morally acceptable, but it will not be of help to such a congregation.
A woman who was attending that church told me that they used to go and borrow money from their pastor whenever they are in need of big sum. The pastor has a thriving business, he has a number of filling stations—petrol stations. But I counsel the woman to always participate in whatever they are giving towards in the church.
I told her, if she is not doing that, they, the members will not be financially blessed. Their pastor who used to give and ask them not to bother, if they do not have, will keep increasing financially; while they, the members, will remain in lack and be borrowing.
Believers should be taught and encouraged to give to God and His
kingdom. Though no one should be forced—coerced or pressured—to give, they should be taught and encouraged to give and be told the benefits or blessings in it.
Paul in the passage of our text was teaching the Corinthians and at the same time admonishing them on giving (2 Corinthians 9:1–7). That is what every ministry leader or minister should do for his congregation.
The people should ask God to bless them, their work, that they would also have what to give (Luke 3:11; Ephesians 4:28).
Whoever is asking you not to bother about giving is not helping you—such a person is further deepening you in lack and poverty. Whatever you sow, you shall reap (Galatians 6:7).
Re f l e c t :
• Are you currently sowing bountifully or sparingly?
• Is there someone in your life who is teaching you not to give or discouraging your generosity? How would you respond to that now?
Peace.
