Great Read : Children Who Are Not Yet Peaceful

in #education7 years ago

If you are struggling or frustrated because there is a child in your class that you don’t know how to help, this is a read that I hope may give you ideas, inspire you or reaffirm your role as a Teacher or Guide.

"Children Who Are Not Yet Peaceful" is written by Donna Bryant Goertz. It is a must read for anyone working directly with children or any school administrators. In the book, Goertz describes her experiences in helping children to find peace in different levels or forms, through a Montessori environment where an inclusive community is formed.

As I read the book, I admired Goertz’ patience, observation skill, and insight. The language she uses to speak to the children and to explain her thought processes is beautiful and inspiring. I am always looking for Montessori role models to aspire to, and she is one I can put on my list! I am in awe.

To a wider scope, Goertz' stories can cast a light on how we act in the world outside the classroom. We label, make assumptions and react quickly instead of with thought and empathy. A utopian classroom or world is not created by inclusion, but rather one where individuals learn the emotional skills to negotiate, problem solve and cooperate in the daily crises that we experience as a part of humanity.

This is a book that I will read again, take notes on, and read again. Give me your suggestions for inspiring books.
