CHARANGO SESSIONS - Chapter TWO - Charango's typical playing techniques

In chapter TWO I've presented you some typical techniques we use to play Charango.

In this chapter we are going to talk about CARNAVALITO and how to play it. This techniques are going to be useful even for Charango or OTHER INSTRUMENTS such as guitars, cuatro, ukulele, and other string-based instruments.

CARNAVALITO is a musical genre and also a dance typically from La Quebrada de Humahuaca, a beautiful place in North Argentina, in Jujuy province.

Its name comes from Carnaval -carnival- because it's played on that date.

It's similar and probably a son of the HUAYNO, a typical genre of the Andes (Perú, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile)

The typical instruments that are played in Carnavalito are Sikus, Charango, Guitar, Bombo, Quena, Erke.

Quena & Sikus

As I told you before, what we are going to learn in this chapter can be played either with charango or OTHER INSTRUMENTS.

First of all, It can be played in 2/4 or 4/4 (there are times that some 1/4 measures can appear) and there is a typical intro that is played for Carnavalito and it has the following chords (C or Am tune):

||: G7 | C | E7 | Am :||

After that it has an small choda of Am E7 | Am E7 | Am

All together it sounds like this:

I've used for this video arpeggio and strum and played in 2/4.

Arpeggio can be played with 4 o 3 notes:

Here are four examples of what you can play in Am using 3 notes:

If you want to strum, the basic rhythm is like the 3 notes arpeggio:

Finally I would like to share with you a video that Leo Canifru gently recorded and edited for us.

This is Las hojas tienen mudanza a popular song we play with NUNA -Mayra Benitez (@may.beni) and me- during our tour in Europe in 2014.
