B&W Redwork Embroidery Butterfly

Here is a butterfly I embroidered using the "redwork" technique. I really enjoy this method of embroidery, as it implies shadowy intricate patterns with the use of only one color. This type of embroidery was called "redwork" as red was the only colorfast dye available in the 1800's when this method was popular. Most often the red thread would be placed on a contrasting white or natural colored linen (I chose a white linen apron for this project). As time went on other colors became more available as the dying processes modernized.

Enjoy!
