Where did democracy come from? Let's take a walk through history

in #english6 years ago
After coming to make some reflections about our society, our day to day, our education system and other issues immersed in those already mentioned, this time I wanted to ask about Democracy, that philosophical idea that it defines most of the countries of the world and that, etymologically speaking, means "Power of the People". However, it seemed a bit trite and I wanted to go through the star gate of time to try to see how we got here. Are you curious? Come, come with me.

Let's Travel in Time

Human societies through time have been organized in different ways, during the Stone Age, when the groups were not very large and the riches to accumulate were very few, the power was divided, being the only "superiority" recognized age, where the older age had greater power in the decisions of the community in relation to the younger.

One of the first cities to be registered is Catalhoyuk, about 8,000 years ago. City in which there was no special person who could be classified as a ruler and where the regime was horizontal. All this until the moment in which the activities carried out by some subjects were of greater importance for the community, than those carried out by the rest.

Shamans. First Hierarchs

In that sense it was as priests or shamans became important importance within the community, because these served as a bridge between the physical world and the spiritual world, thus being the observation of the stars, of the that was thought to send messages to humans. With agriculture, for example, the role of the shaman became more important, gaining more power with it, since the "message of the stars" indicated when to sow and when to harvest.

This type of social changes gave rise to new forms of organization, of which the change of horizontal to vertical relationships stands out, creating with it the hierarchies, which etymologically means: Sacred Order.

For the ancient Egyptians, the pharaoh was an intermediary between the people and the gods. The Japanese emperor is considered "sovereign celestial" and as for the monarchies, for many years and perhaps today, it is believed to be of divine origin.

Thus, thanks to our stargate, we have known some of the different forms of social organization, from the stone age to contemporary times, which has allowed us to identify how or in which figure was concentrated the power and that determined it.

Power, without the use of technical definitions, will not be more than the tool that will guarantee decision makers, that is why we say that in democracies: "Power the People have it "... But, let's ask, where did Democracy come from? Let's continue reviewing

In Western culture, from the 5th century BC, in Greece, emerged the one that is recognized as the first democracy, where everyone took part in the decisions that affected the community ...

All?

No, no, not all, I let myself go. You could not participate in these decisions if you were a young man without military training, if you did not own land, you or your parents had debts or were slaves, or if you were a woman. So only men with property had the right to decide. It was with the passing of the years that black men and women came to have access to the vote, to give some examples.

We return to Our Era

It seems that the stargate brought us back to our era, but with the trip we did we could know a little about democracy and how it was understood in the different periods of our world history. Currently, the model of democracy that prevails in most of the countries is steeped in the ideas of Montesquieu, but talking about how he divides the powers will lead us to touch on other aspects. For now we know where that is what we call democracy, in a next post we can review What is democracy and how is it presented today? Are you interested? Do not forget to visit my profile and soon we will be answering those and the rest of the questions that arise along the way. Until next time, greetings and happy day.
