I was seeing this summer "buy before it's $1!"
And I've missed the boat. I will certainly be waiting for a dip, though. Will not be buying into the Highs.
Assuming it goes to a level I am comfortable buying in...what wallet would I need? Would any ERC20 compatible wallet work or do I need another?

You can buy it through any means that supports ERC20, correct. You need to register your EOS tokens with your Ethereum address before the tokens are frozen in June 2018.
The tokens you are purchasing are just a "mirror" of the actual EOS tokens that will come later.
Buy tokens, store in Ethereum wallet, register Ethereum address with EOS network, store public/private EOS key, hodl.
