Windows keyboard shortcuts that can SAVE YOUR LIFE

in #ergonomics8 years ago

Well, hopefully not literally! If that's the case, you definitely lead a more exciting life than me.

One of the promises of ergonomics is that it helps increase productivity. Adjusting a chair and having a proper workstation helps for sure, but most people using a computer 9 to 5 have powerful tools at the tips of their fingers and have no idea how to properly use them.

The following keyboard shortcuts will definitely help you being lighter on your feet (fingers?) and multitask more efficiently.

MOVE PROGRAM WINDOWS : to split windows on the left / right side of the screen, maximise and minimise windows. Especially useful to split two windows in a screen, or to move windows if you're dual screening.

  • hold down "windows key" + hit the left/right/up/down arrow

OPEN AN EXPLORER WINDOW : to open "my computer". Doubly useful if you have added some folder "favorites".

  • hold down "windows key" + hit "e"

RENAME A DOCUMENT (in windows explorer) : Tired of double-clicking just fast enough but just slow enough to rename a document?

  • Highlight desired file and hit "F2".

ALTERNATE BETWEEN WINDOWS : to quickly switch between active windows.

  • hold down "alt" + hit the "tab" key

ZOOM : to rapidly zoom in or out on a document. (works on most apps).

  • hold down "ctrl" + scroll with mousewheel.

SELECT ALL : Sometimes, you want to copy a whole page or document, but selecting it is awkward. No more!

  • hold down "ctrl" + hit "a"

UNDO / REDO : For people with fast-paced lives, mistakes happen often.

  • Undo : hold down "ctrl" + hit "z"
  • Redo : hold down "ctrl" + hit "y"

PRINT : If you want to print quickly.

  • Hold down "ctrl" + hit "p"

PROJECTOR OPTIONS : The bane of presenters is plugging a labtop or using a labtop they're not familiar with and not being able to project what you want.

  • Hold down "windows key" + hit "p" until you have the correct setting.

LOCK YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN : If you want to lock your computer without sending it to sleep.

  • Hold down "windows key" + hit "L".

OPEN A NEW WINDOW OF SAME PROGRAM : If you want a duplicate, brand-new window of the current program.

  • Hold down "ctrl" + hit "N".

GO TO DESKTOP : If you're the type of person with lots of shortcuts or documents on the desktop.

  • Hold down "windows key" + hit "D".

FIND TEXT : If you're looking for something specific in a long document, there is an easier way.

  • Hold down "ctrl" + hit "F".

OTHER BASIC SHORTCUTS : If you're on Steemit, I suspect you're already tech-savvy and know these, but just in case.

  • Cut selection to clipboard : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "x".
  • Copy selection to clipboard : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "c".
  • Paste selection to cursor : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "V".
  • Transform text selection to Bold characters : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "B".
  • Transform text selection to Italic characters : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "i".
  • Transform text selection to underlined characters : Hold down "ctrl" + hit "u".

Hopefully you learned a couple of new tricks today. Are there are other shortcuts you couldn't live without?
