The painting by Benjamin West was commissioned by the Penn family in the 1770s - about 90 years after the event supposedly took place. What can we infer from that? Was there perhaps an alternative narrative they wanted to distract the public from considering and spreading? (Could that have been the Walking Purchase described by historian Alan Taylor as “…perhaps the most notorious land swindles in colonial history.” )
