The commandments & the wisdom: Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees. Psalm 119:135
The wisdom and the law of Moses cannot be treated separately; understanding wisdom is understanding the law and vice versa. And this is so because the law is an expression of God's eternal wisdom. And Psalm 119, which is a psalm dedicated to the praise and study of the Mosaic law, explains this metaphorically. Psalm 119 is one of the most important songs in the Book of Psalms, and meditating on this hymn allows one to understand many things about the law that are not evident at first sight.
And among the spiritual teachings of the song, one stands out as particularly interesting with these words: "Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees" Psalm 119:135. The song explains that when God reveals his face, the law is understood more deeply. And there's a reason why things are this way. According to what is related in the Book of Exodus 33:20, no one can see the face of God and live. But in other writings of the Bible, perceiving the face of God seems to signify the outpouring of his spirit upon men, as in Ezekiel 39:29.
In other words, the teaching of the Psalm is explaining that to understand God's law, a special grace from above is necessary. That is why the Psalm begins by explaining: "You bless all those who follow your commands from deep in their hearts" Psalm 119:2.
And this spiritual truth can be understood in another way when, as all the prophets explain, hard-hearted people cannot give life to the law. Hardness of heart leads to oppression in society, and this is the opposite of the spirit of the law. That is why the Psalm expresses: "Arrogant people smear me with lies, but in truth I obey your commandments with all my heart" Psalm 199:69. When the author of the Psalm asked that the face of God shine upon him, what he was ultimately asking for was the spiritual gifts of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) and the wisdom necessary to apply the law with a benevolent heart and common sense.
The Book of Psalms then reveals the depth of the law; only when men gave reverence to God with true fear was the law fulfilled in its entirety, as when David and Solomon ruled, and thus through their rulers the people of Israel were able to perceive the benevolent face of the God of the patriarch Abraham and prophet Moses.
