WHAT THE FACEBOOK DATA SCANDAL MEANS TO YOU

Lately, Facebook has been all over the news for the wrong reasons. In case you have been living under a rock, i'll reiterate. Facebook has been submerged in a major scandal after it was discovered that they had sold your data, the data they collect from you every second you are logged in, to a political campaign data company, Cambridge Analytica. Your data is what has made Facebook one of the most valuable companies in the world. Businesses view it as the jackpot! It has always been the businessman's ultimate dream to get unprecedented information on potential customer's behaviors and preferences as this would help in tailoring products the customers cant resist. Facebook cashed in on this dream.
To be honest, Facebook has always been selling your data, which is why you view customised and tailored ads on your timeline, and people generally did not mind this. However, the public outcry comes from the realisation that Facebook users are not treated as customers but as commodities to be sold, that with usual ads, you know what your getting (salesman horseshit) but with a political campaign, you don't exactly know what the agenda is. Calls for stronger regulations are being bayed out. Furthermore, Facebook will go a step further and not only collect your data on your account but also from your browsing history with the help of apps you allow access to your Facebook and pages you visit while still logged in. This makes one wonder how far Zuckerberg will go to collect data.Tapping phone calls?
It has also been alleged that in the coming future, if you wish to keep your privacy on your Facebook account, you will have to pay for it. Literally. With money. So, what's next for you? Probably delete your account; which Zuckerberg says he doesn't think you will do. Or if you still love to rant and view memes on Facebook, you could reverse the permissions you allowed to the many apps through Facebook. And be careful which ones you allow next time.
