Faith in the early church: So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Acts 10:48
The Book of Acts recounts how the holy spirit, after the ascension of Jesus, manifested itself with gifts and power to strengthen the first Christians in the faith.
When Jesus was in the world and spoke to the disciples about the arrival of the Paraclete, the disciples did not understand the words of the divine teacher because they were incomplete people, but after Pentecost, when they were filled with the Holy Spirit who descended upon them in tongues, from that moment on, the disciples were able to understand the truth, and thus preach the Kingdom of God to the pagans and unbelievers.
But not all were moments of joy, grace, and happiness, because persecution, a product of religious oppression, soon made itself felt. The disciples had to endure times where perseverance was essential. And the Book of Acts recounts an important moment in the times of the early Church, the baptism of the first pagans, with the conversion of the centurion Cornelius and his entire family.
While in Joppa, the apostle Peter received a vision from God that puzzled him until he encountered some people sent by the centurion Cornelius, who asked him to go to Caesarea. There he met the Roman official and understood the meaning of the vision, the apostle was not to consider any man impure, but to judge people by their fear of God.
And so the apostle Peter began to preach about Jesus and his spiritual Kingdom to Cornelius, his family, and others present at the meeting. And the Book of Acts recounts what happened: "While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles" Acts 10:44-45.
As a result of this, the Book of Acts recounts what Peter did next: "So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ" Acts 10:48. This fact shows that during the existence of the early Church, baptism in the name of Jesus was related to the knowledge of the Holy Spirit and His mysterious gifts, and not to a simple baptism of conversion or repentance. A faith strengthened by the spiritual knowledge propelled the sect of the Nazarene to become the largest world religion in history.
