“Onye bu mpa gi?”
“O gi bu daadi mu o.”

There was whimper, followed by the sound of something connecting with skin. Lola jumped again. This was the fifth time in three days. She dropped the phone she was fiddling with and walked to the window. She had moved in earlier in the week and her neighbours had given her enough to think about.

The compound was large. On the left was a long building – commonly known as boys’ quarters – consisting of nine rooms. Five families lived there, separated by the thin walls. On the right stood a modern bungalow. The owner of the compound shared that one with his family. Beside the bungalow was a two-bedroom mini-flat. This one, Lola shared with her interesting neighbours who happened to be a couple.

She contemplated knocking on their door but decided against it. She also thought about calling the local police but figured she should find out what was really going on. Besides, the other tenants weren’t bothered or maybe they didn’t know. Either way, she could swear one person was getting hurt. Only one way to be sure.

This was two weeks ago.

The woman had a piece of cloth tied over her eyes. On her wrists were ropes, held in place on the bedpost. She lay on her back. The man traced his fingers lightly on her nipples before flipping her over. He picked up his belt, then bent and kissed her neck.

“What do I do to you when you misbehave?” he asked.

“Punish me,” the woman breathe, pressing her legs together.

“What do you say after that?”

“Thank you, sir.”

The belt landed on her buttocks, twice. He dropped it, untied her wrists and positioned himself between her legs.

Perched on an orange tree just above their window, Lola chuckled. She found a hobby.

The first dialogue is loosely translated as:

Who is you father?
You are my daddy o.

It’s my local dialect which is Igbo.
