Norway vs England: What to Expect in the World Cup Quarter-Final
Norway has already become one of the stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After defeating Ivory Coast in the Round of 32 and then producing a memorable victory against Brazil in the Round of 16, confidence inside the Norwegian camp will be sky-high. Standing in their way now is England, another team that has survived two difficult knockout matches and will believe this could finally be the year they challenge for the trophy.
On paper, England may have the stronger squad. Players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Phil Foden can change a match in a single moment. England normally likes to control possession, move the ball quickly, and create pressure around the penalty area.
Norway, however, has already shown that they are comfortable playing without dominating the ball. Their defence has been disciplined throughout the tournament, while Erling Haaland remains one of the most dangerous strikers in the world whenever Norway wins possession. Martin Ødegaard’s vision and passing could also be decisive if Norway manages to launch quick counter-attacks.
The midfield battle may decide everything. If England allows Ødegaard too much space, Norway can quickly create opportunities for Haaland. On the other hand, if Rice and Bellingham control the centre of the pitch, England could spend long periods attacking and force Norway deeper and deeper.
Set pieces could become another key factor. Both teams have strong aerial players, and quarter-finals are often decided by a single corner, free kick, or mistake rather than beautiful open play. Neither side will want to take unnecessary risks early in the game.
Mentally, Norway enters the match with less pressure. Few expected them to eliminate Brazil, meaning they can play with confidence and belief. England, meanwhile, knows that anything short of reaching the semi-finals would disappoint many supporters.
Expect an intense and tactical encounter with few clear chances. If Norway remains organised and Haaland receives quality service, they have every chance of causing another upset. If England finds its attacking rhythm early, however, their greater depth and experience could prove decisive.
This has all the ingredients of one of the most exciting quarter-finals of the tournament, and it would not be surprising if the winner is decided in extra time or even on penalties.
