The Neverending Story 2 (film): It should surprise no one that this is just awful
I have incredible memories of the original film which came out in the mid 80's. It was a big part of everyone's childhood back then and nearly everyone loved it. I was unaware there ever WAS a sequel until a few days ago. I watched it, it is crap.
This film actually managed to make a fair bit of money which I guess isn't that surprising seeing as how it had the fame of the first film at its back, and the fact that there was no widespread internet in 1990. So they just snuck this one by us i guess.
The story sees Bastian back in Fantasia and he needs to go on some sort of convoluted quest in order to save the realm from another magical force. This entire scenario is prompted by problems that he is having at home that encourages him to return to the bookstore and ends up reading the Never Ending Story book a second time. Although, this time, rather than just being a witness to the story, he is actually transported to Fantasia to actively take part.
We are reintroduced to the old characters that we loved from a few years prior in 1984 but now they are all just garbage. I was most upset about the fact that Atreyu is younger than the last time we saw him and also forgot how to act (it's a different actor, obviously) and the rockbiter has a much different voice... I mean really different. I can do a better rock-biter voice than the voice actor they got to do this. Plus, what is this thing and no... just get it out of here.
The special effects in this movie are bad also, really bad and I would say at times could be considered lazy. The main enemies called "giants" are not even remotely scary and are easily dispatched.
It is as if they never really intended for this to be a sequel at all, but just knew they could rip off the public for around $20 million. They succeeded at one thing at least
You would be hard-pressed to find any actual critic that will say anything good about this movie as well as amateur ones. I fall into the latter category and I give this 4 thumbs down. 1 point awarded only because it can maybe, MAYBE keep someone's kids occupied for an hour and 20 minutes.
You kind of said it all with your review, but this movie was terrible. It especially bugged me that they swapped out Atreyu. I'm guessing that the first one didn't look native American enough? Who knows.
fantastic meme follow up. haha
Wow, I can't believe you just found out about this movie. I didn't think it was that bad. I did think it was corny that the witch was defeated by the power of love.
But of course, I was little when I saw it. Maybe if I watched it now I would see it differently.
I have to admit I was actually looking forward to seeing this film, especially since I had seen the first Neverending Story when I was a little kid. It was undoubtedly one of my favorites; it was filled with fantastic characters and a storyline that didn't talk down to me.
Then I saw this movie.
I have never been a big fan of sequels in the first place, especially if the first story didn't have an ending. This sequel was one of the worst I have seen by far. It is overly simplistic, and I felt no sympathy at all for this new and older Bastian, who seemed dumber than rocks before the evil witch/queen/woman-with-weird-eyes started stealing his memory away. It wasn't even the same Bastian. Come to think of it, not one of the characters was played by the same actor. I get the feeling that they, even if they were out of work, wanted absolutely nothing to do with this hack-job of a film.
First time here... I love movies. Never watched either, though the name feels familiar. I am wondering if the first is available online.
Agree with your words. I saw this movie a long time ago. Many of them love the movie. Not many are loved by many. I have seen the movie two times. I liked it very much. Very Interested Movie love it
you love a 1/ 10 movie. what is the movie called?
Seems interesting, although I haven't seen the movie
The book, people should read that book, the movies even the first one, has nothing compared to the book... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Neverending_Story
lemme look into this. Thank you.
i have heard this is the case. I think i will do that . Thanks!
I saw this movie at a theatre in London, and it is my least favorite memory of that trip. The first movie was incredible - the book absolutely amazing. I had high hopes - and it ruined them all. Read the book. See The NeverEnding Story. Forget this movie exists.
