The Šopska salad is the Balkan version of the chopped salad. Originally from Bulgaria, it is said the salad was originally made to promote the local produce of the region during a tourism campaign in the 1960s. It is made with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, parsley, and of course the traditional Bulgarian Sirene cheese.

Today the Shopka salad is found throughout the Balkan region. You can find it on the menu at restaurants, especially in the summer.
