Daily Opinion #11: There is no such thing as the best pizza

What defines the best pizza?

This is a question that is often asked all over the USA, and probably in many other corners of the world. Is it a 'New York style' pie? Is it a 'Chicago deep dish', or 'Detroit deep dish'? Maybe a 'Sicilian'? It is clear that there are many types of pizza.

People are very opinionated about their pizza's, too. What one person loves, another might not as much. It's difficult to find two people in agreement on what the 'best pizza in town' is. For this reason, I believe that there is no such thing as 'the best pizza' - they are all great, in their own ways. Some are certainly better than others - but it's hard to knock any mix of dough, sauce, and cheese. It's just so wonderfully great.

My favorite is New York style. Thin, large, foldable slices with plenty of cheese and usually not too many toppings if any. It's good fresh and hot, or cold and old - or almost anything in between. Sometimes even better is a spin on the New York style - often called a 'margharetta', It usually has fresh slices of mozzarella balls and a sweeter sauce with plenty of fresh basil, and then topped with slices of tomatoes. The pizza that most of us are used to in the USA is not 'really' mozzarella, it's a mix of a variety of cheeses that is then shredded and has a consistency that is easy to melt. Fresh mozzarella is an entirely different story and not the same at all.

But sometimes that's not what I want either - sometimes I want a thick slice of Detroit style deep dish. It's like an entirely different craving than the New York style pizza. It's like these two foods that are made of the same basic ingredients are entirely different meals, and, they are.

Ok, I've made myself so hungry now, I must go get pizza.

And that's the daily opinion.
